Animal Abandonment a Problem in Area Towns

On a rainy Wednesday, it was by sheer luck that the morning volunteer at Nine Lives saw the blue tote with holes punched in it. The container was beside a mailbox, which the shelter no longer uses, so no one would have checked for mail. Inside the tote was a gray striped cat, wet and cold, much like the towels and food inside with him. Had the rain been relentless, the situation could have ended up much worse. Animal abandonment is a crime in Massachusetts, but according to Diane Saunders, a volunteer at Taunton Animal Care Facility, it happens more often than it should, and prosecution is rare since abandonment is usually done at night and people are not identified. She is a petite girl at 45 pounds. Emma gets along with some other dogs, though she has not been tested around cats. She is about 3 years old. Girl Scouts Help Out Norton Animal Shelter

Project part of ongoing Norton Brownie Quest.

Norton Girl Scouts troop #75395 collected donations for Norton Animal Shelter as part of an ongoing project earlier this month. The girls went through their neighborhood on the K Streets and placed flyers along with trash bags by people's homes May 2. Donations of bleach, pet food, cat litter, towels and more were collected. “The residents are super friendly and as you could see, very generous,” said Krisan Pope, troop co-leader. While some neighbors dropped things at Pope’s house, the rest was collected May 11 and a dozen or so bags of goodies were delivered to Norton Animal Shelter May 16. After they dropped off the supplies, the Girl Scouts were able to play with the cats at the shelter. The community service project was part of a year-…

Norton Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Curly and Midnight [VIDEO]

This week's dogs up for adoption.

Norton Animal Shelter, located just behind Nine Lives at 84 Hill St., has cats and dogs up for adoption. This week, Norton Patch will feature Midnight and Curly. Midnight was surrendered to the shelter along with Curley, due to the family moving out of state for a military commitment. She is about 5 years old. She's a bit more timid than Curley. She would benefit from some training on the leash. Midnight is spayed, tested negative for heartworm and is up to date on vaccines. Curley is about 4 years old. He loves to play ball as you can see by the video and his picture. He would also benefit from some leash training. Curley weighs about 70 lbs. Norton Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Currant [VIDEO]

This week's dog up for adoption.

Norton Animal Shelter, located just behind Nine Lives at 84 Hill St., has cats and dogs up for adoption. This week, Norton Patch will feature Currant. Currant is what the vet believes to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed with Hound. She is about 4 years old. Currant seems to get along with other dogs. She is a bit timid at first with other dogs and with people. She does know a few commands, such as, sit, down and paw. She could still use some training. Training will also give her more confidence.
