By Dan Rafuse Norton High School has a lot to be proud of. According to US News and World Report, it is the 38th ranked school in Massachusetts and it is the 694th ranked school in the United States. Norton High has an incredibly devoted staff. The school is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation and addition. These things are fantastic and extremely important to building the foundation of a great school. However, the most important thing to have when creating a truly wonderful academic institution is a sense of community. Last Friday, the Norton Lancer football team took on Scituate in its home opener. The Lancers fought valiantly through an offensive struggle and came out on top 8-0. Their efforts need to be recognized and …

By Dan Rafuse This past Wednesday, a pair of friends and I were offered free tickets to attend the New England Revolution versus Columbus Crew Major League Soccer match at Gillette Stadium. As a Boston sports fanatic, I consider myself very lucky for having attended numerous professional sporting events. Up until Wednesday, I had never attended a professional soccer game before, so I was not too sure what to expect. I was surprisingly pleased, yet oddly disappointed with the experience. For starters, the only type of soccer I am entirely familiar with is the EPL, or English Premiere League. The EPL has some of the best players and teams in the world. Typically, with the best teams come the best fan bases. England is home to some of the …

By Dan Rafuse It’s been a rough week in the professional sports world. In the past seven days, three professional athletes have been denounced by the media for their use of illegal substances. These substances include testosterone. This drug is an unusable substance in most professional sports. Synthetic testosterone is a performance-enhancing drug often used illegally to gain an athletic advantage. Baseball players Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon have recently failed routine drug tests by testing positive for synthetic testosterone. Both have been issued 50 game suspensions by Major League Baseball. Lance Armstrong, seven time Tour de France winner and inspiration to millions, recently gave up defending himself against the alleged doping …

By Dan Rafuse It’s almost fall, which means Norton High School athletes will be meeting for summer two-a-days. This includes the varsity soccer team, who look to improve on last year’s nail-biting season. The squad finished the season with a record of 5-7-6. The group was a tie away from earning a qualifying bid to the Massachusetts State Tournament before coming up short in their final game of the season. The Lancer boys also recently completed their summer league, losing in the playoffs to Attleboro High School 1-0. With that finished, summer practice is set to begin. Thursday’s two-a-day marks the beginning of a new year for Norton soccer and with a new year comes new hopes. This year’s team has their eyes set on the MIAA tournament …

Being a high school student can be stressful yet exciting all at the same time. This will be my last summer as a high school student because next year I will be going to college. I am so excited to finally be going off into the world and becoming my own person. However, it is very nerve-wracking and stressful. This year has been so hard because we are talking about SAT's and college applications. Even though it is hard, I think this year has been really fun and one of the best. I have met all sorts of new friends and the amount of work has let me test my abilities. High school so far has completely flown by for me. Being a high school student has been a wonderful experience so far as I am sure being in college will too. Also, getting a …

Most people don’t think the Celtics have a chance at their 18th championship, but as the eastern conference playoffs have unfolded, the Celtics chances look more and more favorable. With the Bulls unexpectedly falling in the first round and the Miami Heat losing grip against the Pacers, it looks as if the East is slowly opening up for the Celtics... that is if they are able to get by the 76ers. Although many people are counting the Celtics out, the Celtics seem to have a little bit of juice left in the tank to try and propel to their 18th championship. The championship hopes are always alive as well as Rajon Rondo is at the helm of the starting five. Rondo has the unique ability to make everyone around him better, and his great vision can …

The last movie I got to see in theaters just a couple weeks ago was, “The Three Stooges." If you are the kind of person that likes to laugh and likes comical movies, I would recommend this movie. Everyone knows "The Three Stooges" very well, since it use to be a popular TV show. But to make the movie better, they put Moe, Larry and Curly in an up to date form and in the present day environment. The movie started out in the beginning of their lives as babies. The stooges lived in an orphanage just waiting for the right family to adopt them. Because they were not good kids and were always getting in trouble, no one did. They lived their lives in the orphanage until they got older when the orphanage got the bad news that they have to shut …

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that has been getting popular. It originated in South London in the early 2000s and was played mostly in dance clubs. DJs that make dubstep music have started to get a lot more recognized. It’s not wildly popular, but it’s getting there. Radio stations have started slowly releasing it on the air. Popular rap and pop artists have started incorporating it in small amounts as dance breaks in their songs. It’s more for the young adult age groups from about 15 to late 20s. If you like interesting, robotic sounding, dance music, than you’ll love dubstep. There are also gatherings and concerts that include not only dubstep, but techno and dance music as well. Concerts and gatherings are the best ways to…

There are several reasons but I'd say the biggest reason is that owners/investors haven't figured out how to make television rights for soccer as profitable in the U.S. as they are for football, baseball, etc. Soccer doesn't have time-outs or all the other reasons other sports have to stop the game and insert a few 30-second ads. A typical NFL game of four 15-minute quarters takes three hours to …   more ›
