The Norton Middle School girls basketball team, who won the Massasoit League Title, will be recognized at Monday night's Norton School Committee meeting. The girls beat Westport 27-18 Feb. 14 and went undefeated 18-0 on the season. Also on the agenda, the committee will discuss the fiscal 2014 budget. The Norton School Committee presented their recommended fiscal year 2014 budget of just over $24M Feb. 25, an increase of just under $1.6 million from the fiscal year 2013. The Committee will also vote to approve student attendance at the DECA National Conference. The girls middle school basketball team has made it to the Massasoit League Championship game. They have had a great season, going undefeated with a 17-0 record. Along with the boys, they played their last home game of the season Wednesday. The girls won 30-26 against Somerset. The boys won 38-17. They are 12-5. The boys beat Seekonk 42-39 but the girls fell 22-17.
The Norton Middle School basketball teams wrapped up their season at home against the Seekonk Warriors. The result was a split decision that saw the girls’ team fall 22-17 while the boys held off a lingering Seekonk team end the season with a 42-39 win. In the girls’ game the Warriors slowly but surely built up a 12-4 lead with 1:44 to go in the half but a basket by Sara Coffey and another one from Sarah Jarbeau at the buzzer cut the lead to only four at half time. The Lancers came out strong and tied the game at 12 to continue the 8-0 run from the first half. The Warriors regained the lead but Maddie Murphy (6 points, eight rebounds) tied it up again. That would be as close as the Lancers would get. The Warriors ended the game with an 8-3…

By Chris O'Keefe Norton’s D1 fourth grade boys lost to Mansfield 22-36. Norton held a lead for much of the first half before falling behind for good with 2 minutes to play in the first half. Patrick Pfluke opened the game with a foul line jump shot to get Norton on the board. Matthew O’Keefe led the teams scoring attack with 7 points. Defensively, Norton was led by Brady Chapman who forced several turnovers and was the leading rebounder. The fourth grade D3 girls team put up a valiant effort against Westwood Sunday, but came up a bit short in their loss of 20 - 11. Rachael Sheridan controlled the boards for Norton with Caroline Daly, Jamie Walsh and Victoria Weeman applying the outside offense. The fifth grade D1 girls won their home …
