Norton's McMahon's the culmination of Western style.
Karyn McMahon said that she and her husband have always wanted to open up a restaurant together, and now they have put their dream into reality. “We have always talked about starting it,” she said. “We had a couple other businesses, the restaurants inside the Walpole and Foxborough skating rinks… But we were dependent on their schedule for customers.” McMahon bought the space from the previous owners who ran Old Colony Café, and in two years have since turned it into their ideal space, now called McMahon's Countryside Grille. “We just thought it was a beautiful place,” she said. “We wanted something close to home and to be proud of in the community. The Best Sandwich lives up to its name.
The results are in! It was a tight race with 586 votes and 10 reviews among our top three contestants, but Best Sandwich Shop beat out the competition in the kick off of our Best Of contest. The poll was used to weed out the top three contestants from our list of places that make the best sandwich in Norton. In third place was Produce Barn with 166 votes. The second place runner up is McMahon’s Countryside Grille with 104 votes. The Produce Barn made a last push, but it wasn’t quite enough to make the cut, garnering 166 votes and one five-star review. “The Produce Barn has the best meats in the area,” said Norton Patch user Rosemarie in a five star review she left for the three-in-one store. Readers asked to share their favorite local ice cream spots.
It’s very much summer here in Norton, and one of my favorite things to do on a hot July day is stop and have a cone of chocolate ice cream. When I was a kid (and dinosaurs roamed the earth) the main options in town were Creamy Freeze on Mansfield Avenue where Alberto’s Restaurant is today, Frates Dairy located where Tsang’s restaurant now sits, and Bristol Farms on Old Colony Avenue. There were other places you could get ice cream in those days. Haskins Pharmacy had a soda fountain, Fernandes Super Market (now Aubuchon Hardware) had a snack bar, and I’m probably forgetting a few other spots. But Frates and Bristol Farms were the two spots that were “the” places to go for instant refreshment. Alas, both are now gone. That leaves me …
