Great Norton Cleanup this Saturday.
The Keep Norton Beautiful Committee is gearing up for this year’s Norton Cleanup event on Saturday, April 27. “This year, 350 people are signed up already,” said cleanup task force member Allison Alioto. “We’re hoping that there’s more that will come.” The event, which spans most of Norton and starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, will target all the main streets of town. “And some of the roads we didn’t get to last year,” Alioto said. Alioto added this year many local businesses have donated and sponsored the event. “In addition to cash and raffle donations, some of the area restaurant have donated discounts for wearing the green Norton Cleanup shirt,” she said. Norton clean again.
Volunteers at the first Keep Norton Beautiful town-wide cleanup day overfilled a 130-yard compactor, and needed even more space, selectmen reported Thursday. And in addition to at least 275 registered volunteers, members of the highway department donated their Saturday to the event, driving trucks around to pick up bags left at the roadside by the many groups, teams, and individuals who pitched in. “It went off without a hitch,” said Mary Steele. She commented she herself was picking up across the street from a local convenience store, and ended up bagging countless discarded lottery tickets. “They are making money on this trash, and we are picking it up,” she said. Keep Norton Beautiful a proud success.
This Saturday, I had the pleasure of helping out with the first ever Keep Norton Beautiful town cleanup. It was great seeing the community pull together for one goal...to keep the town they are so obviously proud of clean. "We are thrilled with the community spirit, enthusiasm and effort shown by all today. Norton is a wonderful town and today's event really highlighted the great spirit of this community," said Lisa Ledwith, director of the Keep Norton Beautiful Committee. Despite the cold, damp weather and the threat of rain, the Keep Norton Beautiful committee of the Norton Community Task Force reported that event was a huge success with a final count of 385 people volunteering their time. In keeping with the spirit of the Norton 300th anniversary, the Norton Community Task Force is organizing a town-wide cleanup. This task force was originally started as a drug and alcohol awareness group. Over time, it has evolved and now participates in many other ways that support the Norton community. With support from the Norton Selectmen and the DPW, they are kicking off Norton’s first Keep Norton Beautiful Town Cleanup that is slated to be an annual event. The Keep Norton Beautiful Town Cleanup will take place May 5, 9 to 11 a.m. and will target areas of Norton in need. The goal of the first annual cleanup is to remove litter from roadsides, parks and school grounds. So far, there are over 350 volunteers signed up and 30 sponsors …
