Wrentham school committee appointed former Norton interim superintendent Christopher Martes on Monday.
Norton interim superintendent Dr. Christopher Martes is continuing his work in Wrentham, moving from Norton after assisting the district in selecting Joseph Baeta as permanent superintendent. “You folks need to see if I’m a good fit,” he said. “I like interim work, I bring a set of skills and I’ve that I do like doing this work.” Martes, who served in Norton for the 2012-13 school year, said he’s looking forward to coming to a new town and a new situation. “I can take my skills and experience and come in and see things others may not see,” he said. “Wrentham is an interesting place. I started in elementary education, and that is intriguing to me to come back to it. This would be interesting and challenging for me to go back to my roots.” …

Next step is contract negotiations.
The School Committee has chosen Dr. Christopher Martes as the interim superintendent for Norton Public Schools. “I think the field of candidates was excellent,” said Committee member Beth McManus. “To me Martes rises to the top.” The Easton resident retired last year as superintendent for Foxborough Public Schools. Previously he was superintendent in Framingham for four years until 2007, when he was hired in his hometown of Foxborough. Martes started as a fifth grade teacher in Foxborough. Four finalists interviewed Wednesday night.
Though no decisions were made after the Norton School Committee interviewed Steven Hiersche, Christopher Martes, Michael Malone and David Cressy Wednesday night, they plan to have one by Wednesday. The contract for current superintendent Dr. Patricia Ansay is up Aug. 28, so the Committee hopes to have an interim in place as soon as possible. For the past three years Hiersche has been superintendent for Framingham Public Schools. He spent six years as superintendent in Plymouth and five more in Watertown. Previously he was a mathematics and computer science teacher, then principal at the middle and high school levels. Hiersche has experience working on building projects and is familiar with Race to the Top, an education reform initiative. …

The Norton School Committee couldn't have chosen a better interim superintendent. Chris has solid experience and will bring up the morale of the staff as he did in Foxboro. Our morale was at an all time low when he came in and very strong when he left. He is innovative and will trust the teachers to do their job well as they do.   more ›
