LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Charter Changes Will Strip the Water/Sewer Commissions of all Authority

Letter to the editor from Steven Wiseman of Water/Sewer Commission.

On two separate occasions the Board of Selectmen sent information on all three Charter change questions to every voting household in the Town.  Both of these mailings contained erroneous and confusing information.  The second mailing was not received by the voters in the time frame allowed by law. Both mailings are paid for by the taxpayers, perhaps the Board of Selectmen could provide the public with the costs incurred for printing, mailing and Town employees.   The Water/Sewer Commissions ask that the proper concise information is presented to the voters and allow them to make the proper decisions.  We have addressed the issues in question two only as that is our area of knowledge.  Now let’s look at some of the facts;  One important …

Mr. Moitoza inadvertently makes a good argument for an elected board. Whether appointed or elected, the people who respond to a call to fill an open seat on any board share the same qualifications - an interest in the board's mission, a background in finance if budgeting is involved, and some relevant technical expertise, such as engineering or grant writing. The qualifications of the people who …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Facts About Question 2

Letter to the editor from selectwoman Mary Steele.

On April 24 2012, the Norton voters will have the opportunity to vote on questions concerning Charter changes. Question 2 seems to be the most controversial of the three questions. I understand the importance of and I support all three questions.  I am writing to address Question 2 because I believe the issue is being misrepresented. The Water/Sewer Commissioners have misrepresented Question 2 in Letters to the Editor and “vote no on Question 2, protect your right to vote” signs to mask the actual issue and lead voters to believe they will lose their right to vote by voting  “Yes” on Question 2.  Question 2: The proposed Charter amendment will change the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners (the “Board”) from elected to appointed and …

There is no reason in this world to vote any way but "YES" on making the Water Commissioners appointed. Each of the current commssioners first reached the board by being APPOINTED. This board needs to come under the general authority of the town manager just like the fire, police, and other large departments. Don't buy into this "they are taking away your rights" stuff. A "Yes" vote is a vote for…   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Read and Understand Charter Changes

Letter to the editor from Steven Wiseman.

Recently The Board of Selectmen sent out a forty five page document of the Town Charter and the proposed changes to this Charter. Unfortunately this document only dealt with ballot question number one and some of the information provided for that question was incorrect (sections 3.5 and 3.8 should have been crossed out).  A letter of explanation was recently mailed and corrects the information and provides explanations for questions two and three.  The Charter Review Committee has worked long and hard with openness and opportunity for public input.  I hope that the voters take the time to review and understand the documents.  I may not agree with all of the changes however I must respect the thoughtfulness  and dedication the committee …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Vote Yes on Questions 1 and 2

Letter to the editor from Walter Eykel.

In response to a recent OpEd letter, Get Out There and Vote. (4/12/2012)  It's interesting to me how two people can look at the same set of facts and come to completely different conclusions.  Case-in-point, reading the letter convinces me that the positions discussed should absolutely be appointed.  The skills and knowledge necessary to execute these positions needs to be evaluated by a dedicated selection committee; not a disconnected electorate.  It would be great if all the voters had the time to investigate and evaluate all candidates, but let's be honest, it's not going to happen.  Let's focus on electing the selectman and town manger and let them do their due diligence to appoint the proper, qualified people to these positions.  …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Get Out There and Vote

Letter to the editor by Steven Wiseman.

In addition to urging every voter to exercise your basic right, there are questions on the ballot this election that seek to take away your right to elect the Officials that serve you.    I will address the Water and Sewer Commissioners and the Superintendent of these Departments as I have experience in this position and understand the importance of the Office.  The Commissioners are charged with setting the rates of those connected to the systems, insuring the availability of safe drinking water and providing a system of disposal for the waste. Approximately one half of the households in the Town have failing or failed septic systems.  With the lack of proper drainage soils and mandated disposal regulations, the need for public sewers …

Voting Yes on the change gives us more control, not less. It means better opportunities for better management. Most if not all the current water commissioners first got on the board by being appointed. Most of them have subsequently run unopposed. Don't be fooled - this is about accountability and better service for Norton residents if we vote Yes.   more ›
