Help for Heating Costs

Donations from residents sought to build up new program.

No snow yet in the area, but there is plenty of cold weather to go around. Norton Energy Fund organizer Lee Desmaris told selectmen Thursday one family of four in town received a tank full of fuel oil from the fledgling fund recently because they were using diesel fuel in the home oil burner, and she pleaded with town residents to send money to build up the new program. "There are a lot of working poor," she said, "and they are just under the radar. The energy fund will be vital to helping this population of people." Desmaris said the heating fund, modeled after existing programs in Attleboro and North Attleboro, needs help badly and quickly to keep up with escalating need. Poorer families and senior citizens are already struggling, she …

Mansfield Completes Crossroads District Vote

Mansfield becomes fourth town to approve the filing of an application for creation of combined veteran's services district

Mansfield became the fourth town to officially approve the filing of an application to the state veterans services department for the creation of a combined veteran's services district at their regular meeting on Wednesday. The group, now dubbed the Crossroads Veteran's Services District, was first mentioned by Mansfield Town Manager Bill Ross in September, and the board unanimously endorsed the concept. Ross had been contacted by Foxborough, whose new part time veterans agent Michael Johns was assisting Norton along with Mansfield agent John Hogan, in the absence of a full time agent of its own. Norton had been sharing an agent, Stephen Nolan, with Easton, but Nolan left suddenly. Since the concept was first discussed, Foxborough has …

Easton Joins Norton and Foxborough in Approving Four-Town Veterans District

Mansfield to vote next week.

Easton selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to support an agreement with the towns of Norton, Foxborough and Mansfield to form a four-town veterans district with two full-time veterans agent. The district would be called the Crossroads Veterans Services District. The vote came after a heated discussion with approximately one dozen of Easton's veterans who adamantly disapproved of the district and felt the lack of one full-time agent in Easton would not provide adaquate support for Easton Veterans. The plan, which has been approved by Easton, Norton and Foxboro (Mansfield votes next week) would make Mansfield agent John Hogan, and Foxborough agent Michael Johns full-time agents for the four towns. Each town would also train a …

Selectmen Approve Veterans Services District

Selectmen vote unanimously in support of Crossroads Veteran Services District.

Plans to craft a four-town veteran's services district are steaming ahead, with a unanimous vote by Norton selectmen to support the Crossroads Veteran Services District proposal on Thursday. Foxborough selectmen preceded the Norton vote Tuesday, also voicing a unanimous approval, and Mansfield discussed the proposal several weeks ago, with that board also in support. Easton veterans express disapproval of the proposed four-town veterans services district on Monday. "This is a good program - a lot of people worked hard to get it to this point," selectman Mary Steele said Thursday. "With four towns committed to this, it has to bring more to the veterans." Under the regionalization plan, the four towns would share two agents, and each …

Do You Think Norton's Veterans Services Should Be Pooled with Other Towns? [POLL]

Town officials considering a new veteran's services district called Crossroads Veterans' Services District.

Norton selectmen voted unanimously Thursday night in support of the Crossroads Veteran Services District proposal that would also include Easton, Foxborough and Mansfield. But not everyone in other towns are as enthusiastic. Easton's Board of Selectmen meeting got heated Monday night, as town officials discussed enacting the agreement that would create a new veteran's services district. About a dozen Easton veterans expressed disapproval of the plan at the meeting. "We want our Veterans agent to be a full time veteran working for veterans in Easton, not farmed out to Norton or any other town," said Alvin Smart, the Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Private George F. Schindler Post 2547 of Easton. "Our Veterans Agent should be …
