Lancers Varsity Soccer Shuts Out Sharon

Norton continues on in the "big dance."

By Dan Rafuse The Norton High School boys soccer team qualified for the Massachusetts state tournament last week. This tournament bid was a reward for all the hard work they put in during the regular season. They drew the Sharon Eagles in the first round, playing them to a 5-0 blowout win yesterday afternoon at Norton High.  With both teams finishing with winning percentages at .500, the matchup was sure to be an even one. Norton, however, started the game out strong and never took their foot off the gas. Two early goals from freshmen stand out Jonathon Lach put the Lancers up 2-0 in the first half. The goals allowed Norton to go into the second half feeling confident but the offensive attack wouldn’t stop there.  The Lancers often …

New Kids on the Block

New Testament Knights enter State Tournament, winning in playoff against Innovation Academy.

By Dan Rafuse and Lisa Carvalho The New Testament Knights boy’s soccer team is on its way to the State Tournament for the first time in 10 years. The boys took on the Innovation Academy of Tyngsboro last Friday and won 3-2 in a thriller. The game started off slowly as both teams were getting a feel for each other, with most of the first 10 minutes being spent at midfield. About half-way through the first half, the visiting team scored on a quick-scoring opportunity, giving them an early lead. This seemed to spark the Knights as they suddenly became more aggressive, and scored an answering goal 2 minutes later. The Knights then kept up the pressure and scored a second goal on a free kick by Brendan P. Jones from 50 yards out. The Knights …

PHOTO GALLERY: New Testament Soccer Goes for State Championship

Norton loses the clinch in today's game against Sturgis West Charter School 3-0.

The New Testament Christian School varsity soccer team took to the field against Sturgis West yesterday afternoon to clinch their spot in the state tournament but came up a bit short.   The Knights lost 3-0 against a tough Hyannis team, who scored all goals in the first half. After regrouping in the second half, the Knights defend their net with some exceptional saves by goalie Jon Pladsen.  New Testament has another chance at the States in a rematch against Sturgis West Monday in an away game.  "Anything written or discussed about this team would be incomplete without a few things: their commitment, their love, and their drive," said coach Chet Jobert. "This team was committed far before I started practices with them. They practiced for 2…

Lancer Soccer Prepare for Upcoming Season

Norton High School student Dan Rafuse analyzes the team's chance at making the MIAA tournament.

By Dan Rafuse It’s almost fall, which means Norton High School athletes will be meeting for summer two-a-days. This includes the varsity soccer team, who look to improve on last year’s nail-biting season. The squad finished the season with a record of 5-7-6. The group was a tie away from earning a qualifying bid to the Massachusetts State Tournament before coming up short in their final game of the season. The Lancer boys also recently completed their summer league, losing in the playoffs to Attleboro High School 1-0. With that finished, summer practice is set to begin. Thursday’s two-a-day marks the beginning of a new year for Norton soccer and with a new year comes new hopes. This year’s team has their eyes set on the MIAA tournament …

Norton Boys Soccer Falls To Dover-Sherborn

The Raiders won 3-0 over Norton at Frothingham Field Friday night.

The Norton boys varsity soccer team fell to the defending state champion Dover-Sherborn Raiders Friday night in Dover. Norton let up a goal in the first five minutes of play and failed to get the ball in the back of the net in the 3-0 loss. Head coach Eric Greene was disappointed in his team's performance. “I don’t think we competed with them at all today. I think they’re on a much higher level than we are. They’re the defending state champions and they played like it and we certainly did not,” said Greene. Norton was also the product of some bad luck during the game. In the first half, with D-S leading 1-0, Raider foreward Sam Jordan booted the ball from the top of the box, hitting a Norton defender in the head which then deflected past …
