Winning Norton wrestlers included Ahrayah Saintius, JT Taylor, Myles McAlpine, Jack Cuneo, Elliott Johnson, Tim Casagni, Alek Donovan, Stephen Hudson, Aidan Kahn, Devin Schuko and Mike Travers who leads the team with 24 wins this season including 19 pins. Seven-member senior class guides Lancers to excellent 2010-11 campaign.
You can’t have a successful season without terrific senior talent and leadership. And that is exactly what the Norton High boys’ basketball team possessed this winter. The seven-member senior class helped lead the Lancers to a 15-win regular season and a third-place finish in the ultra-competitive Tri-Valley League. The seniors played major roles in Norton securing its fourth consecutive postseason appearance this winter and its third straight first-round tournament home game. During the four years the seniors were in the program, the Lancers won a total of 59 games, which was an average of close to 15 victories per season. Unfortunately their Norton careers came to an abrupt halt a week ago when the Lancers dropped a tough 56-52 decision …

Lancers’ campaign comes to abrupt halt on Wednesday night.
The postseason was not supposed to end this quickly for the Norton High boys’ basketball team. After a terrific regular season, the Lancers entered the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament as the eighth seed with a 15-7 overall record and were looking for an extended postseason run. But Bishop Stang had other ideas, handing the locals a tough 56-52 setback in the first round of the sectional on Wednesday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. “It is always tough when the season ends so quickly, especially for the seniors,” said Norton head coach Marc Liberatore on Friday. In fact, the 10-year Lancer coach headed to school on Thursday not thinking about a practice or game for the first time since before Thanksgiving. “It is always …

Lancers complete regular season at 15-7 after loss to Vineyarders on Wednesday.
The Norton High boys’ basketball team faced a couple of challenges during its trip to Martha’s Vineyard for a non-league game on Wednesday afternoon. First off, the hosts would be looking for revenge after the Lancers had earned an exciting and hard-fought 56-53 win over a talented Martha’s Vineyard team two weeks ago at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. Second, it was Senior Night for the Vineyarders with their three senior standouts, multi-sport star Randall Jette, Ben Ciciora and T.J. Van Gerven, each playing their final regular season game at home. But Norton had overcome those two hurdles in the first half, holding a commanding 19-point lead at the break, 38-19. Unfortunately, then came the second half. With a 19-point lead and looking…

Lancers take home three championships last Saturday in Wayland.
For the first time in the program’s history, the Norton High wrestling team captured three individual championships at a sectional tournament, accomplishing that feat during the MIAA Division 3 Central Sectional Tournament last Saturday at Wayland High School. During their first four years as a varsity program, the Lancers captured three individual sectional titles. Andrew Rockwell won the first in 2008 with Zack MacTavish and Scott Coleman earning the next two a year ago. However, Norton was able to double that total to six after its performances last Saturday. Junior captain Brett Gallagher went 4-0 to earn top honors in the 119-pound tournament. Not only did Gallagher win his weight class, he earned the trophy for most pins in the least…

Lancers need to win final four regular-season games to qualify for the postseason.
Though it will not be easy, the task is now clear for the Norton High girls’ basketball team. If the Lancers want to qualify for the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament they will need to win their final four games of the regular season. That situation arose following Norton’s tough 58-38 defeat to Martha’s Vineyard in a non-league contest on Thursday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. The loss dropped the Lancers to 7-11 overall on the season, meaning they must win their final four games to finish at .500 and reach the postseason. That quest will begin tonight when Norton hosts Bellingham in a Tri-Valley League game at the Larocque Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Lancers suffered a heart…

Lancers bounce back from loss in Hopkinton with terrific defensive effort.
It was back to the basics for the Norton High boys’ basketball team during its Tri-Valley League game with Ashland on Friday night. After surrendering an average of 70 points during their previous two games, the Lancers reverted back to their defensive excellence, holding the Clockers to just 43 points during a 52-43 victory at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. The victory improved Norton’s overall record to 9-5 and moved the team to within two victories of securing a berth in the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament. The win also allowed the Lancers to move into third place in the Tri-Valley League. Medway continues its reign atop the league standings, owning a 12-2 overall record and a perfect 12-0 TVL mark. Hopkinton is second at …

Lancer teams drop pair of close, hard-fought games to Hopkinton on Tuesday.
The Hopkinton High boys’ basketball team is a tough group to guard under the best of circumstances. But when your team gets into foul trouble, it makes the job of defending the talented Hillers that much more difficult. That’s what happened to Norton on Tuesday night in Hopkinton. Playing their second game in as many nights and third in four days, the Lancers got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter and that led to a Hopkinton parade to the free throw line. The Hillers were 26 of 35 from the foul line in the game and hit a number of key free throws in the final quarter to outlast the visitors 77-71 in a Tri-Valley League game. The win allowed Hopkinton to remain in second place in the league, while Norton is in fourth place. Medway is …
