Chamber of Commerce to Host Economic Summit

The free event is open to business owners, human resource managers and anyone interested in getting grants and funding to expand their business and/or train their workforce.

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses in Attleboro and nearby communities, is sponsoring an economic summit this Tuesday at Bristol Community College. The event will include presentations by various speakers about opportunities for grant funding for workforce development and business expansion.  Among those expected to make presentations are representatives from: "The event is free and open to business owners, human resource managers and anyone interested in getting grants and funding to expand their business and/or train their workforce, in the area," wrote Jack Lank, chamber president. Those who are interested in attending the event should register by contacting the chamber at 508-222-0801.

Chamber Names Person, Business of the Year

The recipients will be honored at a banquet next month.

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which has a membership that includes businesses in Norton, announced Monday the recipients of the person and business of the year awards. The winners are Ed Hurley, president of the Hockomock Area YMCA, and Cryan Landscape Contractors. A chamber press release states, "Under Hurley's leadership, the Hockomock YCMA serves every segment of the population, from preschoolers to senior citizens." State Rep. Betty Poirier nominated Hurley for the award. "At the heart of all of these programs is Ed Hurley," said Poirier, according to the chamber's release. Sen. Scott Brown To United Chamber of Commerce Event: 'We Must Work Together'

In talking at a United Chamber of Commerce event, Senator Brown talks about the challenges and virtues of small business.

Senator Scott Brown spoke to various local business leaders at a United Regional Chamber of Commerce event Tuesday afternoon. Brown, a Wrentham resident, spoke about the importance of small business during the meeting, which took place at the Franklin Country Club. "I'm proud to be pro-business and pro-jobs legislation," he said. "The government can't create jobs, but it can create an environment where you can create jobs." He said the government must look at ways to encourage growth. "We can't get out of this mess overnight, but we do have the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world," he said. "It's not just Franklin competing with Wrentham any more — both of them are competing against the rest of the world." Brown spoke …

Senator Brown to Speak at United Chamber of Commerce Luncheon

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce to host Senator Scott Brown in a special luncheon April 3.

Athena Nominations Being Sought

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Athena Award Luncheon March 21 and is accepting Athena recipient nominations through Feb. 17. The Athena Award recognizes the accomplishments of an outstanding community member that demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in his or her profession; provides valuable service by devoting time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community; and assists women in reaching their full leadership potential. The Women in Business Expo is held in conjunction with the Athena luncheon. Scholarships and Teacher of the Year Applications Available

Scholarship recipients and the 2012 Teacher of the Year will be recognized at a celebratory breakfast in May.

Applications are now being accepted for The United Regional Chamber of Commerce's scholarships and 2012 Teacher of the Year nominations. Several $1,000 and $500 scholarships will be distributed through the Chamber. Applicants must be the son or daughter of an employee of a Chamber-member business, be a high school senior who has applied to an accredited four-year college, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and perform uncompensated community service. Completed applications must be received by April 13. The Teacher of the Year program recognizes an outstanding teacher in one of the 16 communities the Chamber serves: Attleboro, Bellingham, Blackstone, Foxborough, Franklin, Mansfield, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleborough…

Young Professional Organization Launches Website, Seeks New Members

The Young Professional Organization has a place to share its news.

The United Regional Young Professionals Organization (YPO), a spinoff of the United Regional Chamber of Commerce, has been busy the last few months and is happy to announce it has launched a website and is accepting new members. The YPO, formed in 2010, includes a diverse group of professionals who have an interest in social and business networking, community involvement and professional development. The group, whose focus is on 16 communities including Attleboro, Norton, Foxborough, Mansfield and Seekonk, was organized by the Chamber in direct response to the challenges in attracting and retaining diverse young professionals, according to the YPO.  To continue the momentum, the YPO is co-hosting an event with the Hampton Inn at Franklin …
