James Loring and Dan Rafuse each netted 12 points in the Lancers fifth win of the season.
Entering the second half with a seven-point advantage, Norton extended its lead by connecting on five-of-seven shots from the field and six-of-eight attempts from the stripe, which helped the Lancers go onto defeat Hopkinton, 62-48. “I thought in the third quarter we made three quick baskets when [Hopkinton] was pressing, and all of a sudden seven [points] went to 14, and it was a whole different game,” said Norton head coach Marc Liberatore. “I think we talked about being a little more patient [during halftime], and when they pressed, [we made] the right pass to the open guy, and we made shots, too.” James Loring, Chris Huff and Dan Rafuse all scored baskets once the third quarter commenced, while Paul Murphy (eight points) provided two …

Norton's Brett Hanlon's penalty kick provided the Lancers with a 1-0 victory.
If Norton High School’s boy’s varsity soccer team wants to claim a spot in the upcoming MIAA tournament then they’re going to have to play consistent soccer, especially in their final four contests. The Lancers squeaked out a 1-0 victory on their home turf Wednesday against Ashland, and now need two more victories (four points) to clinch a playoff berth. “We did not [make the playoffs last year], so there’s a lot of motivation,” explained Norton head coach Eric Greene. “[Last season] was a discouraging year in my opinion, but we’ve talked a lot about that and we’ve made a lot of changes and they’re responding very, very well.” Norton commenced their match against Ashland by possessing the ball in the Clockers territory. However, missed …

The Norton High School boys and girl’s cross country seasons have officially begun, and on Wednesday, both squads earned important victories against Bellingham. The boys are currently 2-0, while the girls are 1-1. Both teams will compete against Hopkinton 3 p.m. Monday in a home meet. To keep up with the team's schedule and scores throughout the season, click here. Norton Patch caught up with head coach Kent Taylor to discuss the season thus far, as well as his goals and objectives, too. 1.) How many years have you been involved in cross country? Did you run in college or high school? If so, where? “I have been involved with Norton Cross Country for five years (this is my fifth season). I ran in middle school, four years of cross country …

Norton AD sheds light on the past year of Lancers athletics, and looks ahead to next school year.
The 2011-12 high school sports campaign officially concluded its spring season two weeks ago in Worcester. And even though Norton didn’t have a team competing in the Div. III baseball or softball finals, it didn’t faze first year athletic director Nathaniel Gorbert, who acknowledged through an email, how proud he was of his student athlete’s efforts from the past school year. The Lancers excelled quite well in boy’s basketball, wrestling and track and field, while the girl’s tennis improved drastically from their past few seasons. Yet, despite those various sports, Norton’s other teams improved and remained competitive against their various Tri-Valley League foes, too. Norton Patch caught up with Gorbert to discuss the past year of …

Westwood won the boys' meet while Hopkinton took first place in the girls' meet.
While the boys’ meet went down to the wire, things remained status quo in the girls’ meet. Despite only getting four individual wins, the Westwood Wolverines walked away with the boys’ league title beating Norton by only 3.67 points while the Hopkinton Hillers once again won the girls meet. “This meet is not necessarily about how many first places you get. It’s about depth and we’re very lucky to have a lot of great finishes across the board,” Westwood boys’ head coach Joe Mascia said. “These guys have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the season so they deserve it.” Bobby McLaughlin came up big for the Wolverines, completing one of the more tougher doubling efforts in the mile and the two mile. “He ran two really great races and it…

Maddie Thomson and Olivia Karcis will return to the state championship meet while David Aranjo became the first boy in school history to qualify for a postseason meet.
While three Lancers managed to qualify for the state championship meet, it wasn't enough to get the win in the Tri-Valley League Championship. With the depth and talent to take on anyone in the league, it is easy to see why Hopkinton was seen as the favorite going to the TVL Meet. Beating second place finisher Medfield by 469 points, the Hopkinton Hillers were once again crowned the swimming champions of the TVL. The win is the Hillers third championship in a row. Led by senior captain and twins John and Paul Lagasse, the Hillers took eight of the boys events. John walked away as the league champion in the boys 100 breaststroke (1:04.91) while Paul was a double individual champion with wins in the 50 freestyle (23.75) and 100 freestyle (51…

With home schedule completed, Lancers looking to build momentum at away meets.
After splitting their home finales, the Norton High boys and girls cross country teams will now hit the road for the remainder of the 2011 campaign. That stretch of away meets will begin on Wednesday when the two Lancer squads head to Dover-Sherborn for a pair of Tri-Valley League contests at 3:30 p.m. The Norton boys have opened the season with a 2-2 record. They began the fall with a 15-49 victory over Bellingham in a league dual meet at Norton High School. Unfortunately, the following week, the Lancers ran into a pair of large and talented teams in the form of both Hopkinton and Medfield. Norton first dropped a 15-49 decision in Hopkinton. Three days later, the Lancers lost 17-41 to the Warriors at the high school. But last Wednesday on…

Mohawks come to town on a rainy Friday night and leave with a 27-0 victory.
Most times, football games are won up front, in the trenches. In a match-up of the top two teams in the newly-created Tri-Valley League Small School Division that spelled the difference on a wet and muddy Friday night at Adams Field as an up-and-coming Millis/Hopedale squad got a leg up in the race for the division championship with an impressive 27-0 victory over Norton. “Hats off to Millis,” said Norton head coach Ted Currle. “They are huge up front and they won the game up front. That’s where you win games like this.” With the victory, Millis-Hopedale remained undefeated, improving to 3-0 overall and, more importantly, starting 1-0 in the TVL Small School Division. The win puts the Mohawks in position to capture the division crown and …

Lancers looking to start TVL Small Division season with victory over Millis/Hopedale.
Now the fun really begins. After two impressive non-league victories to start the season, the Norton High football team will begin its inaugural campaign in the Tri-Valley League’s Small School Division by hosting the combined squad from Millis and Hopedale on Friday at 7 at Adams Field. Both teams enter the contest at 2-0. The Lancers opened their 2011 campaign with an exciting 20-19 victory over Falmouth two weeks ago in Mansfield. A week ago, Norton literally ran through Austin Prep in a non-league game in Reading for a 28-18 win. The Mohawks began their season with identical 27-6 victories, knocking off Latin Academy in Millis two weeks ago and then defeating Carver last week, also in Millis. “Millis is really good,” said Norton head …

Lancers want to follow up big win last week with another one on Saturday.
With its first division game looming next week, the Norton High football team will look for its second victory of the season when the Lancers travel up to Reading to face Austin Prep in a non-league game on Saturday at 11 a.m. Norton is coming off a heart-stopping 20-19 victory over Division 2A opponent Falmouth last Friday night, a game that was not decided until the final 30 seconds. “It was a great win, but we love them all,” said third-year Norton head coach Ted Currle. “I look back to Medway (23-14 in 2010 season opener at home) as probably the biggest win we have had since I’ve been the head coach.” The Lancers will face an Austin Prep team this week that has had a tremendous tradition under 19-year head coach Bill Maradei, who has …
