DEP Responds to Rollover on Route 495

Approximately 50 gallons leaked on the highway.

The Department of Environmental Protection responded to a tractor trailer that was turned on its side on Route 495 South in Norton Tuesday afternoon.  The accident took place on exit 10. The exit was blocked off for several hours. The driver had to be extricated from his vehicle. No injuries have been reported, but there was a fluid leak. Reports on The Mass Incident Paging Facebook page say that 50 to 75 gallons of fuel were leaked on the highway.

Early Morning Accident Results in 120-Gallon Fuel Spill on Highway

Dump truck collided with tractor trailer on Route 495 North.

Safety officials responded to Route 495 North for an accident involving a 10-wheel dump truck and tractor trailer early this morning. At approximately 1:49 a.m., a dump truck part of a construction crew entered the highway and made physical contact with a tractor trailer traveling along the route near exit 10. In a press release, Norton Fire Department Captain Kent Campbell said the fuel tanks on both of the vehicles were ruptured, and over 120 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway. “Luckily there were no injuries,” Campbell said. The tractor trailer came to a halt in the high speed lane while the dump truck ended up in the breakdown lane. Traffic was diverted between them in the middle lane. Route 495 Diverted Through Norton After Motorcycle Accident

All lanes are now open.

*UPDATE 5:01 p.m.* Route 495, which was closed after a motorcycle accident occured, has been reopened. Traffic is being diverted around exit 10, where the crash happened, through Route 123 in Norton back to exit 12.  "The highway is open now so I think that traffic is flowing fine on the highway," said Norton Police Lieutenant Todd Jackson. "It's still kind of backed up in town from the residual stuff there, but the highway is good." Norton Assists with Route 495 Rollover

One man was trapped inside the vehicle on the ramp to Route 95 North for over 30 minutes.

The Route 495 South ramp to Route 95 was closed today at around 9 a.m. after  a tractor trailer rolled over.  The driver, a 48-year-old male, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital according to state police. He was reportedly trapped inside the vehicle for over half an hour. Fire and EMS personell from Mansfield, Norton and Foxborough were on the scene.

UPDATE: Trailer Falls on Sysco Truck and Pickup

No one was injured in the accident.

At 12:50 p.m. today, Norton Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of Mansfield Avenue and W. Main Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident.  A tractor-trailer unit, operated by Robert Dorr, 42, of Plainville, was making a right turn onto Mansfield Avenue when the load slid off the truck, striking a Sysco truck and pick-up truck, which were heading south on Mansfield Avenue. The load was a storage container. The load struck the trailer of the Sysco truck, causing minor damage, and landed on the front of the pick-up truck, driven by Karl Phillips, 41, of Taunton.  No one was injured in the accident, and no operators were cited. Gillis Found Not Guilty in Westwood Man's Death

George Gillis found not guilty on charges stemming from an accident that killed an elderly Westwood man in December 2008.

A Norton man being tried for negligence in the death of a Westwood man in 2008 was found not guilty this week.  George Gillis, 59, of Norton, was found not guilty by jury on Tuesday in regards to a December 2008 accident that killed an elderly Westwood man. Gillis faced a jail sentence of not less than 30 days and not more than 2 1/2 years, a fine of not less than $300 and not more than $3,000, or both. "Mr. Gillis has maintained his innocence but also felt very badly about the situation," said Gillis's attorney Edward McCormick. "It was obviously a tragic accident, and the jury found that Mr. Gillis was not negligent." The trial came nearly two years after the initial incident, which occurred on December 9, 2008.
