The Wheaton College softball team saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 loss at Wellesley College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon at Potter Field. Wheaton (19-22) fell behind 1-0 in the first as Wellesley freshman Maria LaBouyer (Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City) laced a one-out doubled and came around to score on a single by sophomore Jayne Ellis (Michawaka, Ind./Penn). Wellesley (19-18-1) sophomore Lindsay Johnson (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) led off the fifth with a single, went to third on a pair of bunts, and scored on a sac fly off the bat of junior Lauren Goldfarb (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) to double the Blue's lead. LaBouyer followed with a single to center to plate …

Paige Almeida score a goal in the losing effort as Dedham ends the Lancers' season.
Sometimes a slow start can be the undoing of a team. Despite playing well against a tough Dedham Marauders team, a rough opening 12 minutes saw the Norton High girls' team give up two-goals to Dedham in their first round match in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Tournament. The Lancers were unable to fully recover as their season ended with a 3-1 loss to the Marauders. The Lancers fell behind in the seventh minute when Libby Masalsky banged one in for Dedham to take a 1-0 lead. The Marauders were not done as a shot from Jenna Savi from 25 yards out found the back of the net in the 12th minute of play. With two goals within five minutes of each other, the Lancers were forced to take a time out and try to regroup. “We knew we had to score…

Megan Elliott scored two goals in the win against Millis.
It may have taken a few extra goals than usual but Norton found a way to get the job done. With one game to go before the tournament, the Lancers found a way to get the win, but not without some dramatics. “It was a tough one. Millis played well and they usually do. It was their senior night so I think they played with a little extra motivation,” said Lancers coach Todd Kefor. With a goal in the 78th minute, the Lancers walked away with a 4-3 win over the Mohawks in the final game of the regular season. The Mohawks quickly got on the board early in the first half off a corner kick. Jen Foley scored off a pass from Maddie Brosley in the 4th minute of play to put the Mohawks up 1-0. The Lancers came back shortly after when Paige Almeida …
In a game where both teams needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, the Stallions beat the Lancers 3-0.
An entire season came down to one game for Norton and Medway. Both with 16 points to their record, the final game of the year was a de facto play in game for the MIAA soccer tournament. A win meant they were in while anything else meant the end of the season. The strong effort early by the Lancers slowly turned into a Medway victory as the Mustangs outscored the Lances 3-0 en route to a tournament birth. Despite a couple of early chances that saw Kevin Rogers just miss the top of the net in the 13th minute and Kevin O’Leary’s top shelf shot tipped over the net in the 14th minute, it was Medway that got on the board first. An attempted clear went wrong as the ball deflected off of Matt Coakley’s leg near the goal and into the Norton goal in…

Lancers’ campaign comes to abrupt halt on Wednesday night.
The postseason was not supposed to end this quickly for the Norton High boys’ basketball team. After a terrific regular season, the Lancers entered the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament as the eighth seed with a 15-7 overall record and were looking for an extended postseason run. But Bishop Stang had other ideas, handing the locals a tough 56-52 setback in the first round of the sectional on Wednesday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. “It is always tough when the season ends so quickly, especially for the seniors,” said Norton head coach Marc Liberatore on Friday. In fact, the 10-year Lancer coach headed to school on Thursday not thinking about a practice or game for the first time since before Thanksgiving. “It is always …

Five town residents hope to contribute to deep tournament run for Warriors.
This is what the Coyle-Cassidy High girls’ basketball team has been working and building towards the entire season, the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament. The Warriors, with five town residents on their playoff roster, will enter the Division 3 South Sectional as the third seed with an 18-2 overall record. The 18-2 mark is the best regular-season record in the program’s history. The 1987 Warrior state championship team completed that campaign with a full-season school-record total of 22 wins. Wareham is the top seed in the sectional with a 19-1 overall record. Norwell is also 19-1, but lost the coin flip to the Vikings for the first seed and had to settle for the second spot. The Warriors are third with Fairhaven the fourth seed …
