Wheaton Places Sixth Overall At U.S. Collegiate Nationals

Lyons finish inside the top-10 for 25th straight season.

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team placed sixth overall at the U.S. Collegiate Nationals, hosted by Stanford University at the Avery Aquatics Center, with 47.5 points. The host Cardinal captured their seventh U.S. Collegiate Nationals title with 97.0 points while Ohio State University was second (78.0) and Lindenwood University ranked third (76.0). In the team routine finals, Wheaton placed eighth overall as freshman Ann Marie Brasacchio (Sarasota, Fla.), sophomore Riley Callahan-Mayo (San Diego, Calif./San Diego Sweetwater Dolphins), junior Nicole Chicoine (Santa Rosa, Calif./Red Wood Empire Synchro), senior Christine Dyster (Tempe, Ariz./Arizon Desert Gems), sophomores Janine Kopeski (Sterling, Mass./ANA Synchro) and Kayla …

Synchro Opens Collegiate Nationals With Strong Performances

Moses, Wendth finish tenth in duet semis.

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team opened up day one of the U.S. Collegiate Nationals, hosted by Stanford University at the Avery Aquatics Center, with several strong performances Thursday afternoon. Wheaton sophomore Kayla Moses (East Greenbush, N.Y./CDYMCA Sculpins) turned in an eighth place performance in the solo semifinals with a score of 77.9250 points. Junior Nicole Chicoine (Santa Rosa, Calif./Red Wood Empire Synchro) placed 12th overall compiling 73.7250 points for her routine. In the duet semifinals, Moses and senior Kirsten Wendth(Waterford, N.Y./CDYMCA Sculpins) ranked tenth overall with a score of 76.3875 points. Synchronized Swimming Finishes Second Overall At ECAC Championships

Lyons score 82.0 points to claim runner-up honors.

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team finished second overall for the fourth-straight season at the East Collegiate Regional/Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships this past weekend with a score of 82.0 points. Canisius College claimed its 16th-straigh ECAC title with 100 points, Boston University finished third with 65.5 points, the University of Pennsylvania was fourth (57.5), Penn State University checked in at fifth place (36.0) and Smith College ranked sixth overall (32.5). The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team placed second overall out of five teams at the Boston University Invitational with 61.0 points. Synchronized Swimming Finishes Second At Canisius Invitational

Lyons post four separate second place finishes.

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team finished second overall at the Canisius Invitational on Saturday afternoon after taking an 82 day layoff from competition. Canisius won the invitational with 87 points, Wheaton had 71 points and Penn State finished third overall with 19 points. Swimming & Diving, Synchronized Swimming Teams Participate in Hour of Power Relay

Lyons raise funds for pediatric sarcoma research.

The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams and the synchronized swimming team recently participated in the seventh annual Ted Mullin "Hour of Power" Relay on Monday, November 19 raising funds for pediatric sarcoma research. The "Hour of Power" Relay event honors Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. Funds raised through the event support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. Carleton College held its first "Hour of Power" Relay on November 7, 2006 and has seen the charity event blossom from 15 team in its first year to over 160 teams in 2011 with 8,000 student-athletes participating. Wheaton Opens 2012-13 Season At Home With New England Figure Meet

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team opened its 2012-13 season by hosting the New England Figure Meet on Sunday morning at Balfour Natatorium with Boston University.  Senior Kirsten Wendth (Waterford, N.Y./CDYMCA Sculpins) earned first place honors in the Collegiate B competition as she posted a score of 65.565.  The Lyons also took the top-five overall spots in the Collegiate C competition with senior Christine Dyster (Tempe, Ariz./Arizona Desert Gems) leading the way in first place overall (57.637). Wheaton Synchro Caps Record Season with Six Individual Award Winners at U.S. Collegiate Championship

Wheaton College senior Christiana Butera, of San Diego, Calif., has been named the 2012 National Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Athlete of the year while freshman Kayla Moses, of East Greenbush, N.Y., became the first Wheaton College student-athlete to earn U.S. Synchronized Swimming All-American honors this past weekend at the 2012 U.S. Collegiate Championship in Gainesville, Fla. Butera and Moses was also among the four Wheaton student-athletes to receive the U.S. Synchronized Swimming All-Collegiate Award (Division III), joining juniors Kirsten Wendth, of Waterford, N.Y., and Rebecca Gordon, of North Haven, Conn. Goals in Synch: Christiana Butera Picks Senior Year Over Olympic Games Bid

Mount Helix-area native again brings her Wheaton College team home to train in La Mesa.

Four billion people are expected to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympic Games in late July, with athletes from 200-plus nations waving to the world. Christiana Butera won’t be among them. A member of the U.S. national team in synchronized swimming last summer, Butera was eligible to compete for a spot on the Olympic team in November. But she passed it up. “It was a different experience than I expected,” Butera said of the national team, which took ninth in the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. “I much prefer the collegiate experience.
