For the second year in a row, the Norton wrestlers have won the D-3 Central Sectionals outscoring Wayland, Tyngsboro, Holliston, Hudson and 10 other teams in a hotly contested tournament at Wayland Monday. Behind 32 points after the quarterfinals, the Lancers rallied through the consolations and championship finals to win by 18 over host Wayland. At the same time, they avenged a loss to Holliston which cost Norton the Tri-Valley League championship earlier in the season. Twelve of 14 Lancers earned medals for their performances. JT Taylor (145) and Stephen Hudson (285) were weight class champions while Mike Travers (182) finished a close second. Myles McAlpine (152), Jack Cuneo (160), Elliott Johnson (170) and Tim Casagni (195) all …

By Dan Rafuse The Norton High School boys soccer team qualified for the Massachusetts state tournament last week. This tournament bid was a reward for all the hard work they put in during the regular season. They drew the Sharon Eagles in the first round, playing them to a 5-0 blowout win yesterday afternoon at Norton High. With both teams finishing with winning percentages at .500, the matchup was sure to be an even one. Norton, however, started the game out strong and never took their foot off the gas. Two early goals from freshmen stand out Jonathon Lach put the Lancers up 2-0 in the first half. The goals allowed Norton to go into the second half feeling confident but the offensive attack wouldn’t stop there. The Lancers often …

By Dan Rafuse and Lisa Carvalho The New Testament Knights boy’s soccer team is on its way to the State Tournament for the first time in 10 years. The boys took on the Innovation Academy of Tyngsboro last Friday and won 3-2 in a thriller. The game started off slowly as both teams were getting a feel for each other, with most of the first 10 minutes being spent at midfield. About half-way through the first half, the visiting team scored on a quick-scoring opportunity, giving them an early lead. This seemed to spark the Knights as they suddenly became more aggressive, and scored an answering goal 2 minutes later. The Knights then kept up the pressure and scored a second goal on a free kick by Brendan P. Jones from 50 yards out. The Knights …

Ranked first going into the state tournament, Norton fell just short of its goal to win a state title, and finished second out of 54 teams in the D-3 State Tournament at Taconic High School in Pittsfield on Saturday. Western Massachusetts powerhouse Hampshire Regional High School finished first. It had been a tough week with illness and injuries for the Lancers. Senior co-captain and two-time defending state champion Brett Gallagher (120 lbs) suffered a bad knee sprain in practice on Tuesday. He soldiered on winning his first match but had to default in the quarter finals and was out of the tournament. Had he been healthy, he may have made it to the finals and earned enough points for Norton to win the team title. In addition to his two …

Local 12-year-olds hoping fourth time is charm at state tournament next week.
Nothing short of a state championship will do for the Norton American 12-year-old all-star team this year. The local squad will head to Chelmsford on Saturday to begin play in the Cal Ripken State Tournament, looking to eclipse their performances from the last three years and return to town with a state title. This group of players has won four consecutive Cal Ripken District 4 championships, but will be looking for their first state crown next week in Chelmsford. “We have been there the last three years and we would like to win it all this year,” said Norton head coach Dan Callahan. “Our goal this year is to win states and nothing else. I’m very confident in this team. These kids are playing the best I have seen them play since I have …
