Varsity Softball Stomps Stoughton in Season Opener

Lancers defeat Knights 9-1.

Norton's varsity softball got off to a great start to the new season Thursday, domineering Stoughton 9-1. Jackie Dunne, a sophomore at Norton High School, pitched a complete game victory giving up four hits and three walks while striking out three. Junior Marisa Dole (3-4), junior Maggie Morris (2-3), sophomore Ashley Cibotti (2-3) and sophomore Kathy Remick (2-3) led the 12 hit attack for Norton. Things were off to a rough start for Stoughton as the right fielder and second baseman collided in the first inning, sending Jaqueline Kuhn off the field in an ambulance for a possible concussion. Stoughton tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, with #9 sliding in to home for a run. That would be the only run earned for the …

Lancers Softball Ready For Fresh Start

New softball coach Brian Clemmey takes the field.

After a season that saw the Norton High School softball team go 7-13, the Lancers are looking for a fresh start with new softball coach Brian Clemmey. While new to the softball team, Clemmey is no stranger to Norton. The former Mansfield softball coach has spent the last four seasons on the sidelines of the football team as their defensive coordinator.  Even before the opening game, it is apparent that coach Clemmey is challenging his new team with two scrimmages against Division 1 teams North Attleboro and Taunton. Despite going against schools with double or even triple the enrollment of Norton High, the Lancers have been doing their best to hang in the scrimmages. “We scrimmaged two top level D1 teams in Taunton HS and North Attleboro…

Norton 10U Softball Takes Big Step This Year

After only winning a few games during the spring, team earns nine victories this summer.

The abrupt fashion in which its season ended doesn’t take away from the tremendous amount of success enjoyed by the Norton 10U girls’ softball team this summer. The improvement of the team this year was quite impressive. During the 2010 fall campaign, the squad didn’t win a game. Norton only earned three victories in the spring, but made the huge jump this summer, winning nine of 10 regular-season games to earn a share of first in the 10U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League. Unfortunately, Norton’s postseason then came to a premature end as the team lost to rival Walpole in the semifinals of the 10U East Division playoffs last week. “I was really proud of the way the girls played this summer,” said Norton manager …

Terrific Season For Norton 12U Softball

Locals come within one victory of securing league championship this summer.

Though it fell just a little short of winning a championship, it was still an outstanding summer campaign for the Norton 12U girls’ softball team. Competing in the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League, Norton completed the regular season unbeaten, finishing first in the 12U East Division with a 9-0-1 record. The locals then played two exciting postseason games, winning the first one and dropping the second in the league championship game. “We are so proud of what the girls accomplished this season,” said Peter Hamill, who managed the team for the first time this summer. “The team definitely met my expectations this season. The kids really played as a team. We had a great group of girls. They fought right to the end of the season. That …

Better performance on field results in share of league regular-season title.

An improvement in its defensive play on the field has led to increased success this summer for the Norton 10U girls’ softball team. And the result has been a terrific regular season in the 10U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League and an opportunity to capture the league championship when the playoffs commence next week. “Our defensive play from the beginning of the season to now is like night and day,” said Norton head coach Rob Nosky, whose team has won nine of 10 division games this summer. “It has been phenomenal. We have worked on our defense a lot and the kids have improved both mentally and physically with their defensive play. A’s Edge Red Sox In Exciting Major League Final

A’s overcome early 3-0 deficit to beat Red Sox for Major Division championship.

It did not look good for the A’s entering the Major League baseball playoffs. After starting the season with a 4-1 record, the team lost its final seven games of the regular season to finish seventh in the seven-team Major Division. The A’s faced a difficult road to the championship entering the postseason. But the team was able to put together a terrific run, winning four consecutive games that culminated with a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox in the title game on Friday night at Burchill Field A. Trailing 3-0, the A’s tied the game with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jack Callahan then scored Adam Lesiw with a long single off the left-field wall with one out in the bottom of the sixth to break the deadlock and give…
