Norton Selectmen Discuss Liquor Policy Changes The Norton Board of Selectmen discussed their plan to revise the alcohol policy of the town. Selectmen decided in an earlier meeting to take a look at their current liquor policy since it hasn’t been changed since the early 90s. The biggest issue of contention on the policy was the punitive rates for establishments in Norton that break the town’s policy. Currently in the policy, the punitive measures for a first and third offense had minimums. A first offense was a suspension of the place’s alcohol license for five days and the third offense was 10 to 30 days. Kimball and Salvo seek reelection on Board of Selectmen.
Several people have already begun their road to election day by obtaining nomination papers. Incumbents Robert Kimball Jr. and Robert Salvo Sr. are looking to be reelected while George Gillis is also vying for a seat. School Committee chairperson Andrew Mackie is seeking reelection while Beth McManus’ seat is being eyed by Valerie Desmond. Ralph Stefanelli and Robert Salvo Sr. are both trying to keep their Housing Authority positions. While three seats are available on the Planning Board, so far only incumbent David Miller has taken out papers. Sexual misconduct prompts selectmen to shut down bar Jan. 25.
Due to an incident of sexual misconduct at Sportsway Cafe, the local bar will be facing a one-day liquor license suspension next month. On Feb. 10, Norton Police Department received a report from a female Wheaton College student that she was sexually assaulted while at the Sportsway Café earlier that month. The victim stated to police that on Feb. 2, she was at the bar with friends when she was sexually assaulted by Paul Panaikas, an employee of the establishment. He was working at the time of the incident. Panaikas said that the 21-year-old woman initiated sex with him. Panaikas was arrested and charged with one count of rape and one count of indecent assault and battery of a person over the age of 14. He was released on $2,500 cash bail …
