Norton to receive up to 12 inches of snow.
Due to the weather, school for Norton will be closed Friday. Heavy, wet snow and strong winds are the cause for Norton's school doors to be closed today, as a winter storm warning will remain into effect until 1 p.m. Total snow accumulations will be 8 to 12 inches. Wind will be 15 to 25 MPH with gusts up to 55 mph with temperatures in the 30s. New Testament Christian School, Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, Bishop Feehan High School and Cardinal Spellman High School are also closed. This is the fourth school cancellation of the year for Norton Public Schools. Before today, the scheduled last day of school was Monday, June 24.

What are your thoughts on the Norton Superintendent's decision not to cancel school?
While some residents are still digging themselves out of Blizzard Nemo, interim superintendent Dr. Christopher Martes says that school is in session. Some nearby school districts such as Attleboro, Mansfield and Taunton have cancelled classes. Some parents and many students believe Norton should follow suit due to some back roads and sidewalks still covered in snow. "Newcomb Street is in terrible shape, Newland not much better," said Norton mom Allison Plante Keaney on Facebook. "I am really uncomfortable with my 1st grader riding the bus with these road conditions. Add a layer of freezing rain and it's not good." Not everyone is against the decision, however. The announcement illicited a series of cheers from many parents. "It sounds good…

Students last day slated for June 24.
The unintended long weekend for students at Norton Public Schools has come to an end, as school is planned to be back in session Tuesday. "We will have school tomorrow unless something unusual happens overnight," said interim superintendent Dr. Christopher Martes. "Our schools are clear of snow and ready to go." At this point, Martes believes that students will have to make up Friday, even though a state of emergency was declared. With today’s cancellation, the last day of school is scheduled for Monday, June 24. There have been three cancellations altogether, with the third being a result of Hurricane Sandy Oct. 29.

Bishop Feehan High School recently held its annual two-week long Summer Academic Academy for incoming freshmen. Over 100 students chose to participate and enjoyed many opportunities for learning the ropes of a new campus by participating in group activities to enhance social interaction, reviewing math and English curriculum and learning “survival” skills. Those skills included how to take notes, how to use the library, how to stay motivated and how to avoid discipline problems. “The Summer Academic Academy has been a great success each year. Whether the kids realize it or not, it gives them the confidence to start the year off on the right foot and helps to eliminate the first-day-of-school jitters,” commented Ann Perry, vice president …

Samantha Kramer, a staff writer for AccuWeather.com, says AccuWeather.com Long-Range meteorologists are projecting a weak to moderate El Niño by late summer, which could mean more snow this winter.
A new report from AccuWeather.com expects more snow this winter as a result of a weak to moderate El Niño. The presence of El Niño or La Niña - and their strength - is used to project how active the winter season is going to be, according to Samantha Kramer, a staff writer for AccuWeather.com. Kramer says the website's long-range meteorologists are projecting a weak to moderate El Niño by late in the summer. "For kids praying to hear school's out for a snow day, the weaker the El Niño, the better," Kramer writes. "Weak El Niños have brought snow-packed winters to most major Northeast cities in the past, according to AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Jack Boston." In contrast, weak La Niñas and strong El Niños historically bring …
