Jared Ide of Norton was recently honored at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's second annual Celebration of Scholarship Luncheon. Ide is majoring in plastics engineering. The celebration, held at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, brought together 300 individuals who have endowed scholarships and the students who have received them. UMass Lowell chancellor Marty Meehan told the donors and students in attendance that giving to scholarships and other areas of the university is important. "We have to be entrepreneurial in our approach to ensuring the growth of UMass Lowell and private support is absolutely essential to that effort," Meehan said. School Committee names John and Abigail Scholar recipients.
The School Committee released the names of 51 Norton High School seniors who were named as John and Abigail scholars Monday night. The scholarship entitles the recipients to free tuition at any University of Massachusetts campus, or any state or community college. The scholarship is awarded to students for up to eight semesters of enrollment, which must occur within six years of high school graduation. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must earn an advanced score in math or English in the 10th grade MCAS test and at least a proficient score in the second subject. The student must also have a combined MCAS score that ranks in the top 25 percent of the district. “This is a nice accomplishment for these students,” said Committee …

Each year Honey Dew Donuts awards more than $25,000 in scholarship money to graduating high school seniors from Honey Dew Donuts franchise communities throughout New England. This year, Norton resident and high school senior Joel Sitte is one of approximately 100 area students selected to receive a 2012 Honey Dew Donuts Scholarship of $250. Sitte is a graduating senior from Norton High School. He will be attending the Digipen Institute of Technology in the fall. To be eligible for the scholarship, Sitte had to demonstrate academic excellence by maintaining a grade point average of B- or better, be accepted into a four-year accredited college or university, and participate in community service activities. Applications are now being accepted for The United Regional Chamber of Commerce's scholarships and 2012 Teacher of the Year nominations. Several $1,000 and $500 scholarships will be distributed through the Chamber. Applicants must be the son or daughter of an employee of a Chamber-member business, be a high school senior who has applied to an accredited four-year college, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and perform uncompensated community service. Completed applications must be received by April 13. High school seniors living within 30 miles of a Cumberland Farms location and planning to attend college next fall are eligible to receive a scholarship of $1,000. The Department of Education and Secondary Education announced that 18,261 students in the Class of 2012 have been awarded the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, qualifying them to receive free tuition at any Massachusetts public college or university. This includes 55 seniors from Norton High School. “I think these 55 students need our sincere congratulations,” said superintendent Dr. Patricia Ansay at Monday's School Committee meeting. “I know they are going to go far. And we wish them luck.” The 18,261 total is an increase over last year’s 227 students.
