Norton Approves Memorial Bench in Memory of Angel Pina The Norton Board of Selectmen approved a request from a resident to place memorial bench on Evergreen Beach. The request, from resident Sandra Oullette, is to memorialize her daughter Angel Pina, who died in a Route 24 crash last summer. “A lot of her friends hung out there,” she said. “It was something special to the kids.” Oullette said the funds for the bench have already been collected, and they just needed selectmen permission. Wheaton Alumni Party Raises Noise Concerns The Norton Board of Selectmen approved two one-day alcohol permits for a function at Wheaton College on May 17, but with some contention. Selectmen vice chair Robert Kimball raised his concern about an ongoing issue with the noise level at certain parties. “We don’t care that you go out and have a good time, as long as [the students] don’t scream,” he said. Norton Picking Up Pieces of Veterans District After Easton, Mansfield Leave After the announcements that Mansfield and Easton are dropping out of the Crossroads Veterans District, Norton is taking a long hard look at their options concerning veterans services. While in the district Norton did not have a full-time veterans agent. The town was trying to rectify this when Mansfield and Easton announced they were dropping out. “We were short a person and we were getting ready to hire someone else,” said selectmen chair Timothy Giblin. Norton’s Yelle Gym Gets More Repairs The Norton School Committee has requested a town meeting warrant article designed to allow them to fund repairs needed in the Henri A. Yelle gym floor. According to committee members, a pipe underneath the gym floor burst and water damaged the wood in the floor. “Steam and water does significant damage to wood,” school director of finance and operations Barry Nectow said. “We tried to dry it out, but it didn’t work.” This is the second time Norton has needed to repair the gym floor in two years. Norton Woman: ‘We Are Lucky to Be Alive’ A Norton mother who was close to the explosions at the Boston Marathon Monday said she is lucky to be alive. "Me, my husband Kevin and my daughter Rachael were at the finish line 50 feet from the explosion, we saw our friend Mike Everson go by and were waiting with our video camera on for our other Norton friends," Nancy Weber told Norton Patch in an email. "I have the explosion on video and our reaction, I screamed run to my daughter and you can see all the feet and chaos. It was horrific! we are so lucky to be alive!" Husband of Norton Town Clerk Arrested for Attempted Murder The husband of Town Clerk Danielle Sicard was arrested for allegedly trying to murder her Thursday. James T. Sicard, age 44, of Norton, was placed under arrest by Norton police after an investigation stemming from a disturbance occurring at his residence earlier that day. “The victim reported that Sicard twisted her neck several times during the altercation, prevented her from leaving and attempted to suffocate her with a towel,” said Norton Lieutenant Todd Jackson. "After the struggle, she was able to leave the residence and call police.” Danielle Sicard was treated at Sturdy Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital for her injuries. Coach Chosen for New Norton High Hockey Team Norton Public Schools interim superintendent Dr. Christopher Martes announced that a coach has been chosen for the new hockey program at Norton High School. Discussion on Tri Town Sewer Draws Heated Debate in Norton Tri Town Sewer District negotiations have been going on for the past five years, and members of the Water and Sewer Department told the Norton Board of Selectmen they’re getting close to an agreement at a meeting Thursday night. The issue of contention that’s holding up negotiations is the amount of money Norton would receive for hosting the sewer expansion needed to handle the three towns. The main crux of the problem for Norton at least is that the expansion would require two additional parcels for which the town currently collects taxes on, taxes which the town would lose. Norton Might Have a Bike Path in the Near Future Principal transportation planner for the Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District Adam Reccia met with Norton officials and townspeople on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of expanding the World War II Memorial Trail bike path into Norton. Reccia said though he and the SRPED are very optimistic about the proposed expansion, the plan is only in its infancy at the moment. Norton Wants to Retry Solar Power at Landfill Norton selectman Robert Kimball said on Thursday that he received a letter from a solar company that wishes to build a solar generating area at the landfill. Kimball said that the monies obtained for the town over a 20-year period would equal $5M with this particular company’s planned claim. Norton town manager Michael Yunits said the town had tried this before and the company on which they placed the bid never even started, and the town would be better served if they sent out a request for qualifications rather than a request for a proposal bid.
