Eagle Scout Candidate Constructs Flagpole for Park

CJ Weber hopes to earn highest Scout rank and for park vandals to be caught.

Once again, an Eagle Scout candidate in Norton has shown that he will fulfill his oath of influencing citizens in his troop and community to follow in his footsteps of goodwill. Currently a Life Scout, 17-year-old CJ Weber recently installed a flag pole and garden at Everett Leonard Park. Bill Seaver provided the electrical work so the flag could be illuminated at night.  “I chose this for my project because I figured I would be able to visit it and it will be around for years,” Weber said. He invested almost $1,000 and 130 hours on the project. Over 30 of those hours were spent on planning and gathering materials alone. Donations were gathered from family and friends to defray the cost. Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories …

Fire Department, Middle School Students Compare Hovercrafts [VIDEO AND PHOTO GALLERY]

Technology and Engineering class creates styrofoam hovercrafts.

There is not much cooler than creating your own hovercraft and seeing how it compares to one built by professionals. And that’s just what eighth grade students at Norton Middle School got to do. Mike Kramer’s Technology and Engineering class designed and built model hovercrafts out of styrofoam food containers. The designing process alone took two weeks, and the students had to prove it would work before they began construction. It took several attempts for some students, but they managed to get their crafts off the ground. The hardest obstacle they had to overcome was the weight of their vehicles. “We have these little batteries that we hook up and then we tried to race them down the hallway, but they weren’t powerful enough,” said …

Norton Resident Makes Improvements to Woodward Forest

Marks trees, outlines points of interest for visitors.

In addition to completing his Eagle Scout project, Norton resident Owen Galvin also improved Woodward Forest in March. As a member of Troop 95 led by Lynn-Marie Dubeau, Galvin organized the public service project and led other scouts to help complete it. The project involved adding new markers to the blue and orange trails  in the Woodward Forest off Gateway Lane in Norton. He also researched some of the features of the various ecosystems in the forest and highlighted “points of interest” for those who visit this wonderful natural area. With guidance from LPS Vice President, Dan Murray, he made laminated copies of a map of the woods with descriptive information about important things to see along the trails. Owen raised half of the funds …

Norton Patch VIP Of The Week: Sam Carignan

Youth seeks Eagle Scout status through Santa House project.

It’s always refreshing to hear of someone giving their time to better their community. Sam Carignan, 14, has done just that in his quest to become an Eagle Scout of Troop 12. Sam was the project manager for the Santa house on the Town Common that was unveiled during the town’s Festival of Lights celebration last month. Santa’s house was the project Sam chose to reach the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and was enjoyed by children who got to sit with Santa and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. “My job was to plan it and run it,” Sam said. “The others in the troop did the actual building.” Sam was also in charge of securing materials to build the house. Sam’s father, Peter, financed the $1,000 cost of the project, funds that Sam is …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Park And Rec Happy Eagle Scout Chose To Build Santa House

Sam Carignan, of Troop 12, chooses Santa house as Eagle Scout project.

Letter to the Editor: The Norton Parks and Recreation Commission would like to thank Sam Carignan, of Troop 12, for choosing our new "Santa" house as his Eagle Scout project. The new addition to our Festival of Lights and the Town Common has been a huge success.  The kids loved coming into Santa's magical home to tell him what they would like for Christmas. Many children have also stopped by the house to drop letters to Santa and will wait patiently for his reply. We are extremely proud of Sam, and all those that helped make this project a reality; we hope that each of you involved are equally as proud. You all helped to make this Holiday Season and many more to come a magical experience for the kids of Norton. As part of his Eagle Scout …
