The Wheaton College women's basketball 2012-13 season tips off on Thursday, Nov. 15 against non-conference opponent Roger Williams University at 7 p.m. The Lyons return nine players from last year's squad that ranked second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in three pointers made, third in free throw percentage (72.1 percent), third in assists (12.5 per game) and fourth in defensive rebounds (25.0 per game). Sophomore forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) led the squad in scoring last season averaging 11.9 points per game, shot 80.7 percent from the free throw line and 45.3 percent from the field. Following the 2011 season that was highlighted by an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament appearance, the Wheaton College field hockey program received great news, an invitation to return to campus after playing what will be its third season at Lincoln's School's Faxon Field in Rehoboth. On the heels of a generous gift from field hockey alumna Diane Nordin '80, the college made an announcement to raise the remaining funds to build an on-campus turf field adjacent to the Haas Athletic Center. Plans call for the facility to open by the 2013 fall season. Although construction has already begun, there will be an official groundbreaking ceremony during Homecoming weekend in mid-October. Lancers look for third consecutive victory Thanksgiving Day.
The Norton High football team will be looking for its third consecutive victory on Thanksgiving Day when the Lancers travel to Bellingham for a Tri-Valley League contest on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. It has been a rough month for Norton. After opening the season with six consecutive victories over Medway, Ashland, Dover-Sherborn, Hopkinton, Westwood and Medfield, the Lancers have dropped three of their last four contests to stand at 7-3. Norton's first loss of the season came 42-0 to Holliston on Senior Night at Adams Field. A 29-6 win in Millis the next week against the combined team from Millis and Hopedale improved the Lancers to 7-1.
