UPDATE: Driver Who Hit Pedestrian Cited for Failure to Yield

E. Main Street incident under investigation.

A female pedestrian was struck on E. Main Street in front of Wheaton College Sunday night. The accident occured at 8 p.m. when the Samantha Barchard, a Wheaton College student, was hit while in a crosswalk at Howard Street and E. Main Street. The 21-year-old was struck by a vehicle operated by Stephen Tapper, 61, of Stoughton. Tapper’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on E. Main Street. Tapper stated to police that he did not see the pedestrian due to her wearing dark clothing and the foggy weather conditions. The area contains three crosswalks across E. Main Street that are heavily monitored and enforced by police. Barchard was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital by the Norton Fire Department for non-life threatening injuries. Tapper …

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Crosswalk

Holly Santos transported to hospital, later released.

At 9:04 p.m. Friday night, Norton Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of E. Main Street and Howard Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk.  Holly Santos, 20, of Fall River, was struck by a vehicle operated by John Deschenes, 32, of N. Easton, while attempting to cross East Main Street at the crosswalk in front of Wheaton College.  Santos was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by the Norton Fire Department and was later released.  Santos is not a student of Wheaton College, but was visiting.  Deschenes was cited for a crosswalk violation. The incident is under investigation by Patrolman Scott Sweeting.
