Capital improvements topping $1 million for the fiscal year 2014.
The Norton Board of Selectmen discussed the fiscal year 2014 capital budget on Thursday, which topped out at $1 million. The original requests from all departments totaled about $1.9 million, but Town Manager Michael Yunits said it had to be cut down. “It’s just not possible,” he said. Yunits said a good portion of the money was coming from the Water and Sewer department for the proposed water treatment plant designs of wells four five and six, which was $400,000. Capital projects funded by the capital committee budget were $436,021, with an extra $120,000 in funds from borrowing. Jan. 22 4:26 p.m. Caller reported his custom bicycle stolen from South Worcester Street. Jan. 23 10:46 a.m. Caller reported a black sedan tried to avoid hitting a Waste Management Truck and ended up hitting a utility pole instead on East Main Street. 12:31 p.m. A four-vehicle collision was reported on West Main Street. Patients were treated on scene for minor injuries. Jan. 24 12:50 p.m. Caller reported damage and vandalism to five vehicles in the Old Colony Road Lot. Jan. 25 1:01 a.m. Callers reported a large fight in progress in the parking lot of the Sportsway Café on West Main Street. Police were able to resolve the issue without incident.
Norton selectmen discuss the possibility of an active shooter exercise in the town.
The Norton Board of Selectmen discussed on Tuesday the possibility of executing an active shooter exercise at one of Norton’s schools. An active shooter exercise is a plan that simulates an armed shooter within a building in town and gauges the response of emergency officials. Police, fire and EMS personnel would be on hand to deal with potential situations that an armed assailant in a building could bring up. Selectmen also discussed the possibility of installing a camera system into the high school as part of its current renovation work. “If we’re building a new high school, why would we not include the opportunity to put cameras on the premises?” said selectman Robert Kimbull. Power already back up.
At approximately noon on Saturday, residents on South Worcester Street reported a power outage. The Norton Fire Department reported that the outage was localized to that section of the street, and was not a serious repair. Norton Fire reported that power was restored by National Grid around 1:20 p.m.

Norton 5th Grader Helps Raise Money for Family Impacted by Fire About a month after a fire broke out on the second floor of their 39 Evergreen Road home in Norton, the Clinkscale family is still recovering. But thanks to a few generous people like 11-year-old Nicholas Pucino, they are about $200 closer to getting back on their feet. A fifth grader at Henry A. Yelle Elementary, Nicholas’ bus drives by the home every day. When he found out about the fire, he thought it would be a good idea to have a fundraiser at the school to help the family out.
