Norton Considers Active Shooter Exercise
Norton selectmen discuss the possibility of an active shooter exercise in the town.
The Norton Board of Selectmen discussed on Tuesday the possibility of executing an active shooter exercise at one of Norton’s schools. An active shooter exercise is a plan that simulates an armed shooter within a building in town and gauges the response of emergency officials. Police, fire and EMS personnel would be on hand to deal with potential situations that an armed assailant in a building could bring up. Selectmen also discussed the possibility of installing a camera system into the high school as part of its current renovation work. “If we’re building a new high school, why would we not include the opportunity to put cameras on the premises?” said selectman Robert Kimbull. Bob, I can see how you might get that impression from the news story, but as chair of the school committee I can tell you the article does not reflect what has been happening. After the Connecticut tragedy we thoroughly reviewed the status of security and safety in the schools, including meeting with law enforcement.
