Comeback victory over Franklin on Thursday night gives team first league crown.
A mark of a champion is its resiliency. Trailing 5-0 early in a championship game, a lot of teams would have folded. Not the Norton American 13-year-old all-star baseball team. Facing a 5-0 deficit entering the bottom of the third inning, top-seeded Norton outscored third-seeded Franklin 13-3 the rest of the way to come away with an exciting 13-8 victory and the Hockomock Summer League’s Senior 13A championship on Thursday night at the David Mollica Baseball Complex at Norton High School. This group of players has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success during their years together, but this was their first Hockomock League crown. “The kids were very excited to be able to win their first league championship,” said Norton manager Jim …

Three local youth softball teams set to begin league playoffs this week.
Having already secured the regular-season title in the 12U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League, the Norton 12U girls’ softball team will now turn its focus to winning the league’s postseason championship this week. The locals completed the regular season with a 9-0-1 record, the only blemish being a 10-10 deadlock with a talented Franklin Tornadoes 12U squad on July 13 in Franklin. “After the spring, we felt the team was capable of having a season like this,” said Norton assistant coach Greg DeGirolamo, whose squad faced a rigorous spring schedule prior to the summer campaign. “Anything short of this would have been a disappointment.” The Tornadoes placed second in the division with a 7-1-1 record, while the Sharon…

Better performance on field results in share of league regular-season title.
An improvement in its defensive play on the field has led to increased success this summer for the Norton 10U girls’ softball team. And the result has been a terrific regular season in the 10U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League and an opportunity to capture the league championship when the playoffs commence next week. “Our defensive play from the beginning of the season to now is like night and day,” said Norton head coach Rob Nosky, whose team has won nine of 10 division games this summer. “It has been phenomenal. We have worked on our defense a lot and the kids have improved both mentally and physically with their defensive play. We knew we would have to get better defensively if we wanted to get better as a …

The Norton Lancers 12U girls’ softball team clinched the regular-season championship in the 12U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over the Walpole Hurricanes 12B squad on Wednesday night on the junior varsity field at Norton High School. The win allowed Norton to complete the regular season unbeaten, owning a terrific record of 9-0-1 with the only blemish being a 10-10 deadlock with a talented Franklin Tornadoes 12U squad (7-1-1 record) on July 13 in Franklin. “The team has gotten progressively better each week and we feel the team is playing its best softball of the season right now,” said Norton assistant coach Greg DeGirolamo. Norton 12U is managed by Peter Hamill with DeGirolamo…
