Feb. 8 superstorm cost $69,000 to cleanup out of $80,000 budget.
The Norton Board of Selectmen heard reports last Thursday concerning the snow and ice budget. The budget allows for $80,000 worth of spending for snow removal and ice mediation, but town manager Micahel Yunits said that the Feb. 8 storm alone nearly overtook that. “It cost $69,000 alone for that storm,” he said. “Right now it’s at $74,000 over budget.” Yunits said that the town did really well considering the severity of the storm and other towns’ responses. He also said since the town-approved deficit spending before the storm, it’s really paid off. “I drove down here that Saturday morning for a meeting driving home through Randolph,” he said. “There were side streets in developments in Randolph that hadn’t been touched. Wednesday, Feb. 6 7:35 p.m. Caller reported a vehicle slid into a telephone on Shelly road with no injuries. 5:03 p.m. Caller reported damage to the drive thru on 246 East Street and the driver drove off after the incident. 6:22 p.m. Caller reported a possible break in attempt on Mansfield Avenue after a subject had approached his porch. The caller said he lunged at the suspect, who then ran off. Thursday, Feb. 7 10:17 a.m.: A caller from Norton Glen Road is upset because he has found drug needles on his walkway and by the playground. 10:44 a.m.: A caller reports her unlicensed boyfriend just left with their blue Kia Spectra, possibly heading towards Brockton. Sidewalks to be cleaned Tuesday, flooding the top priority.
The blizzard of 2013 hit Norton hard over the weekend, and town officials say the cleanup is continuing. Norton town manager Michael Yunits said as of Monday the primary concern is clearing out Norton’s catch basins to reduce the chance of flooding. “Right now, they’re concentrating to uncover some of the catch basins unfortunately because of the rain,” he said. “That’ll put off some of the sidewalks until [Tuesday].” He added that the DPW is actively looking at the low areas in town that have been known to flood in the past. “They’re targeting the low areas, the areas that have had flooding before,” he said.
