NMS students walk for the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings.
About 700 Norton Middle School students lined up on Wednesday to help raise funds for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The event asked for donations from whoever would give. “We accepted donations but nobody had to donate to participate,” principal Michael O’Rourke said. NMS teachers Christine Gonet and Jess Meier created the event. “Since it was a marathon we thought we’d do something together in the school that would give the kids the opportunity to really show their support and raise some money at the same time,” Meier said. She said they started talking about it in late April, and they were able to organize the whole school into the event. Meier said about 600 or 700 students participated, and they think they’ve raised …

The Wheaton College women's basketball team has earned a reputation for being as active in the community as they are on the court, engaging in service projects that range from food drives to coaching and mentoring the Heller's Angels Special Olympics basketball team. The latter effort has put them in the running for an award from the NCAA. Most recently, the Wheaton women worked this semester with the eighth grade girls' basketball team from Norton Middle School, helping them grow athletically and personally.
