Lancers open defense of state title with loss at home to Raiders on Friday.
One of the keys for the Norton High baseball team during its state championship season a year ago was outstanding defense. Unfortunately it was defense that let the Lancers down during their season opener on Friday afternoon against Dover-Sherborn. The Raiders used effective pitching and timely hitting, taking advantage of some Norton defensive miscues to open the campaign with an 8-3 victory over the Lancers in a Tri-Valley League game at the David Mollica Baseball Complex. “I think this should bring the kids back down to earth a little,” said Norton head coach Ted Currle. “They have to work a lot harder than they have been. You are not going to win when you have more errors than hits and when you give up more walks than you have hits. …

Lancers open 2011 campaign at home on Friday against Dover-Sherborn.
The Norton High baseball team will begin its quest to both repeat as Division 3 state champions and win the Tri-Valley League crown when the Lancers host league foe Dover-Sherborn on Friday at 3:45 p.m. at the David Mollica Baseball Complex. “The regular season can’t come soon enough,” said Norton head coach Ted Currle. “We are ready to play some games. The kids are excited to get the season started. I’m always a nervous wreck before the start of a season, but we have smart players and have gotten everything in. It is just a matter of executing all the things we have worked on.” On Friday, Norton could face Dover-Sherborn’s standout junior left-hander Sam Jordan, who beat Norton 6-2 on May 3rd of last year at the Mollica Complex. Lancers will need to replace seven seniors from state championship team.
After losing seven seniors off a team that won the State Division 3 championship a year ago, this spring the Norton High baseball team will have a nice group of young players to go along with the talented and experienced corps returning from the title squad. It was a magical season for the Lancers a year ago. They entered the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament as the 10th seed with a 12-8 record. And all Norton did was win six consecutive games and secure the third state title in the program’s history with a 7-4 win over Ware last June at the LeLacheur Park in Lowell. Norton loses seven seniors from that team, including captain Scott Fraatz as well as Chris Lenihan, Ed Hannon, Bryan Feeney, Andrew Ethier, Jeremy Wright and Steven …

Defending Division 3 state champions begin quest to repeat this week.
The Norton High baseball team began defense of its Division 3 state championship this week and the weather was the Lancers’ toughest opponent when their workouts started on Monday afternoon. It was only nine months ago when Norton registered its sixth consecutive victory and earned the Division 3 state title with a 7-4 win over West champion Ware on June 19 at the LeLacheur Park in Lowell. “It doesn’t feel any different from the start of practice last year,” said third-year Norton head coach Ted Currle, who has guided the Lancers to a sectional semifinal and a state championship during his first two seasons running the program. “We have a new team and are starting over. Last year is something that the returning players and I will never …
