Q&A with AJ Bashaw and Sean Ryan (Brockton Rox)

Bashaw, Ryan talk about their summer with the Rox.

They never played together at Norton High School, but this summer AJ Bashaw and Sean Ryan are the only two players from Norton, who’re suiting up for the Brockton Rox in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.   Bashaw, who has yet to register a win on the bump this season, has appeared in 10 games thus far and has struck out seven batters, while yielding 10 hits. His longest outing as a relief pitcher occurred on July 15 against Nashua, where he pitched 3 2/3 innings. Ryan, who currently leads the league with four triples, has been the spark plug for the Rox offense. He’s played in 32 games, and has recorded 45 hits, 19 RBIs, 18 hits and 14 stolen bases. He recently earned a spot in the inaugural FCBL All-Star game, which will be played …

Lancers Baseball Tournament Bound With Win Over Medway

The Lancers finish the regular season 10-10 with a 3-0 win over Medway.

It wasn’t long ago that the Norton High School baseball team was at 4-9 and in dire straits as far as post-season play went. To avoid elimination, the Lancers were going to have to go at worse 6-1 for the rest of the season. With little mistake for error, the Lancers won their sixth game in seven attempts with a 3-0 win over Medway to get Norton back into the MIAA Division 3 South tournament. A scoreless affair through the first four and a half innings, Christian Delano scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth off of a sacrifice fly ball from Corey Marsden. "Obviously we weren’t stringing hits together so we needed to sac guys over and we did a good job of it,” Lancers head coach Ted Currle said. After forcing Medway to …

Lancers Bats Come Alive in 8-0 Win Over Ashland

Anthony O’Leary went 2-4 with a run and a pair of RBIs. Russell Boudreau went 1-3 with a run. Corey Marsden went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run.

Over the past couple of weeks, no one can argue that the Norton Lancers’ games haven’t been interesting. With six out of the past eight games being low scoring affairs, an 8-0 win over the Ashland Clockers was a welcome changed for a team that is desperate for wins. “I thought that a lot of guys that have been struggling came out of it today and that’s good,” Lancers head coach Ted Currle said. The Lancers for all intents and purposes ended the game with a seven run third inning that easily ranks as one of their finest innings of the season. “As far as scoring runs it was our best by far,” Currle said. “Anthony Hallgreen got it going with what looked to be a single and with pure hustle and heart got a double. That got us going, that’s what…

Improved Defense Leads To Success For Norton 10U Softball

Better performance on field results in share of league regular-season title.

An improvement in its defensive play on the field has led to increased success this summer for the Norton 10U girls’ softball team. And the result has been a terrific regular season in the 10U East Division of the Hockomock Girls’ Summer Softball League and an opportunity to capture the league championship when the playoffs commence next week. “Our defensive play from the beginning of the season to now is like night and day,” said Norton head coach Rob Nosky, whose team has won nine of 10 division games this summer. “It has been phenomenal. We have worked on our defense a lot and the kids have improved both mentally and physically with their defensive play. We knew we would have to get better defensively if we wanted to get better as a …

Different Feeling For Norton Baseball This Year

Lancers suffer first tournament loss in two years on Saturday in Medfield.

Last year, the Norton High baseball team experienced what made the postseason great with an emotional and exciting six-game ride to the Division 3 state championship. Unfortunately, the Lancers experienced the other side of playoff baseball on Saturday afternoon in Medfield, dropping a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to the Tri-Valley League champion Warriors to abruptly end their season. The experience the players gained from that magical run of a year ago was almost enough to carry them through the nerve-racking game on Saturday as the Lancers held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, thanks to a game-opening home run to right field by senior left fielder Phil Rizzo. But then the unexpected happened as senior captain and…

Norton Baseball Ready To Begin Defense Of State Crown

Defending Division 3 state champions will open tournament against Canton at home.

This will be a whole different postseason for the Norton High baseball team. Last season, the Lancers entered the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament as the 10th seed with a 12-8 overall record. Six victories later the team had earned the Division 3 state title. But there will be no sneaking up on teams, no underdog roles in the tournament this year. When the pairings for the sectional were announced on Tuesday afternoon, every other team in the bracket looked to see where Norton had been placed in the section. The Lancers will begin their quest to repeat as Division 3 state champions when they host Canton in a Division 3 South Sectional preliminary-round game on Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at the David Mollica Baseball Complex…

Tournament Spot On Hold For Norton Baseball

Lancers will look to clinch postseason berth on Friday after Thursday’s game is rained out.

The Norton High baseball team will have to wait one more day for its opportunity to clinch a postseason berth. The Lancers’ Tri-Valley League game on Thursday at the David Mollica Baseball Complex against Medfield was postponed because of rain and thunder. The Warriors made the trip down to Norton from Medfield, but the game was called after an extended period of rain as well as some thunder and lightning would not allow the contest to begin. The two teams will make-up the game on Saturday when the Lancers travel up to Medfield for a league contest at 10 a.m. In return, the regularly-scheduled game between the two teams that was to be held in Medfield next Wednesday afternoon will now be held at the Mollica Complex that same day at 3:45 p.…

Norton Baseball Holds Off Hopkinton

Lancers thwart late rally by Hillers to earn TVL win on Tuesday at home.

It was a typical game between the Norton and Hopkinton High baseball teams. Any time the Lancers and Hillers play you should never leave the game early, no matter what the score is. Earlier this season in Hopkinton, Norton had an early 8-4 lead but the Hillers scored nine unanswered runs to come away with a 13-8 victory. And that was the case again on Tuesday afternoon at the David Mollica Baseball Complex. With Norton ace A.J. Bashaw on the mound, the Lancers looked to be cruising to a victory, owning a 5-1 advantage heading into the top of the seventh inning. But Hopkinton staged a rally in that final frame, scoring two runs and getting the tying run to first base with two outs before Bashaw squelched the comeback and Norton had earned a…

Feeney Hit Sends Norton Baseball To Victory

Lancers need 10 innings to outlast Millis in home TVL game on Friday.

An RBI single by junior rightfielder Colin Feeney with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Norton High baseball team a hard-fought 3-2 win over Millis in a Tri-Valley League game on Friday afternoon at a chilly David Mollica Baseball Complex. Collecting just four hits over the 10 innings, the Lancers used excellent pitching and defense to earn their second consecutive win to improve to 2-2 overall and in the league. A pair of right-handers, senior captain A.J. Bashaw and classmate Rob Cormier, combined to hold the Mohawks to just two runs and four hits over the 10 innings. The duo also teamed up to strike out 15 batters and walk just three. Bashaw went the first eight innings, surrendering both Millis runs and four hits. He …

Norton Baseball Looks To Get Back On Track

Lancers hope to rebound from 0-2 start during two TVL contests late in the week.

After dropping its first two games of the season, the Norton High baseball team will look to turn things around during a pair of Tri-Valley League contests at the end of this week. The Lancers opened the season with an 8-3 loss to Dover-Sherborn and junior standout pitcher Sam Jordan last Friday afternoon at the David Mollica Baseball Complex. Norton then had to travel to Hopkinton to face the two-time defending league champions. And as always seems to be the case when these two teams play, it was another crazy game as the Lancers rebounded from an early 4-1 deficit to take a four-run lead at 8-4. However, Hopkinton scored nine unanswered runs to come away with a 13-8 victory. “It is a good rivalry between the two teams and we hope to …
