Men’s Swimming & Diving NEWMAC Championships Preview

Lyons look to improve on last season's seventh place finish.

The Wheaton College men's swimming and diving team will compete in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Thursday, February 14-Sunday, February 17, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at the Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. Different from years past, the championship will commence on Thursday night with the preliminary rounds of the men's one-meter diving event. On Friday morning, preliminary heats for both swimming and diving events will start at 10:00 a.m., with consolation and championship heats taking place in the evening at 6:00 p.m. The same format will hold true for Saturday and Sunday of the NEWMAC Championships. Mount Holyoke Women's Basketball Slips Past Wheaton

Lyons lose 51-49.

Mount Holyoke College used a 6-4 run with 3:29 remaining in the contest to claim a 51-49 victory over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Howard Gym. Freshman forward Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) fell one point shy of her third-straight double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) notched a team-high ten points on 5-of-9 shooting and four rebounds while classmate Kirsten Ferrari (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) added eight points, three assists and two rebounds. MIT Downs Wheaton, 84-47, In NEWMAC Opener At Home

The Wheaton College men's basketball team was dealt an 84-47 loss by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon in Emerson Gymnasium. Sophomore forward Mike O'Loughlin (Milford, N.H./Milford) scored a team-high nine points, dished out three assists, had three steals and picked up two rebounds for the Lyons. Classmate Mike Cannon (New York, N.Y./Hyde School) contributed eight points on 4-of-9 shooting, a team-high seven rebounds and one steal. Norton Native Placed on NEWMAC All-Conference Team

Wheaton College junior Sean Ryan, of Norton, is a student-athlete named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Team. Joining him will be sophomore Alec Palioca, freshman Apolinar De la Cruz, senior Dan Haugh, junior Frank Holbrook, Senior Hal Landers and junior Eric Jensen will join him. Wheaton also received the conference's Sportsmanship Award. A native of Norton, Ryan was named NEWMAC Player of the Year after leading the conference in hits (73), runs (41), doubles (16), total bases (102), and stolen bases (24). Ryan hit safely in 34 of 41 games - including 22 multi-hit games - and finished second in the conference average (.403) and third in RBI (33). Lyons Capture 12th NEWMAC Championship [VIDEO]

Behind the arm of junior Frank Holbrook (Middletown, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and the bat of classmate Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass/Norton), the No. 9 Wheaton College baseball team won its 12th New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship and third-straight with an 11-2 win over Babson College Saturday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. With the win, the Lyons improve to 34-8 and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season and 11th time in program history. Ryan finished the tournament batting .571 (8-for-14) with a home run, four RBI, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases to earn Most Outstanding Player honors. Lyons Softball Season Ends With NEWMAC Tournament Loss

The Wheaton College softball team saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 loss at Wellesley College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon at Potter Field. Wheaton (19-22) fell behind 1-0 in the first as Wellesley freshman Maria LaBouyer (Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City) laced a one-out doubled and came around to score on a single by sophomore Jayne Ellis (Michawaka, Ind./Penn). Wellesley (19-18-1) sophomore Lindsay Johnson (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) led off the fifth with a single, went to third on a pair of bunts, and scored on a sac fly off the bat of junior Lauren Goldfarb (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) to double the Blue's lead. Men's Tennis Falls Short in NEWMAC, Women Take Wheaton Invitational

The Wheaton College men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College Wednesday afternoon at Clark Tennis Courts. The win moves the Pride to 5-8 (1-1 NEWMAC) while the Lyons fall to .500 at 3-3 (0-2 NEWMAC). Senior Neall Oliver (Portland, Maine/Deering) improved to 5-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over freshman Kyle  Mersereau (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) at No. 1 singles.
