Will Marijuana Ever Be Legal In The U.S.? [POLL]

New Gallup poll shows support is its highest.

Yesterday, Gallup announced that for the first time in history, fully half of Americans polled believe that marijuana should be made legal in the United States. Four decades ago, only one in seven Americans supported legalization. Not surprisingly, strong support for legalization exists among liberals (69 percent), adults under 30 (62 percent), Democrats (57 percent) and independents (57 percent). Interestingly, however, more than a third of Republicans and conservatives support legalization as well. Since 2009, Massachusetts marijuana laws have been among the most lenient in the nation. Here in the Commonwealth, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana is only a "civil offense," which is like a traffic ticket, subjecting the …

Town Approves Marijuana Fine Increase

Those caught using marijuana to be issued $300 fine.

Article 17 was passed at Town Meeting Wednesday night, approving a fine of $300 to anyone found using marijuana in public.  In 2009, voters approved a statewide measure decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. As a result, anyone caught with an ounce or less of marijuana owed a $100 civil fine instead of ending up with an arrest record and possibly facing jail time. “We found that the issues of marijuana have not gone away,” explained Norton Police Chief Brian Clark. “We see a lot more violence because of it.” Lee Tarantino, vice chairman of the finance committee, said it's not worth the town's money to take someone to court for a $100 fine. “For $300 it’s worth the town’s time to take someone to court to collect the $…

“We see a lot more violence because of it.” Violence because of marijuana? You've got to be kidding! Where did that info come from? If laying in a hammock under a tree listening to music is violence, then I suppose this statement is true. Violence? Like what? Ring Ding wrestling? Twinkie tossing? Alcohol related violence in this country is rampant, but that will never be addressed because alcohol…   more ›

That's a cop-out Lee. Very few towns go the 15% route anymore, it is too labor intensive and ineffective to have an elected Charter Commission. Many towns have gone the home rule petition route in the last 5-10 years and changed the format. The selectmen did NOT say this "was not the way to change our form of government" but instead said it could not be done that way. They were wrong. Yes, …   more ›

AN INSIDE LOOK

October Town Meeting has Something for Everyone

Charter changes, pot fines, more hours for library all slated for discussion at October meeting.

The fall session of Norton’s Annual Town Meeting will convene on Wednesday, Oct. 12th at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Norton Middle School. Voters should notice this is a change from the usual venue at the Yelle School gymnasium. That building is currently undergoing repairs and is unavailable. There are currently 22 articles scheduled to be presented for action by the voters. Some are routine, some are unusual, and all are important. But there are a few that can, and should, attract more than the usual amount of attention to our fall gathering. Chief among them are some articles concerning possible changes to the town charter. The Charter Review Committee has spent, and continues to spend, considerable time trying to update the existing …

I understand they are trying to collect any fee the town can get. However, the argument has always been let the people decide...they decided pretty overwhelmingly in 2008. You mention that the police could either pursue criminal or civil methods...doesnt that defeat the whole purpose of when Question 2 passed to avoid making this a criminal case? Great job as always, Bill, big fan!   more ›
