2012 Wheaton Women's Volleyball Season Preview

Lyons open with 1-2 mark at Invitational.

Head coach Craig Letourneaudidn't waste any time making an imprint on the Wheaton College women's volleyball program, as the second-year man brought in a staggering 10 freshmen hailing from seven different states to complement his nine returning players.  Hitting the recruiting trail hard, Letourneau hopes to see the fruits of his labor this fall.  "I am ecstatic with our first recruiting class here at Wheaton," said Letourneau, who made two head coaching stops at Emerson College and Rhode Island College before landing at Wheaton. Wheaton College got a chance at redemption. However, the result wasn’t what the Lyons had desired.  One day after the Marietta College baseball team downed Wheaton 6-5, the Lyons got another shot at the defending Division III national champions in the title game. Marietta -- the top-rated team in the nation entering the tournament -- scored four runs in the first two innings and used a strong pitching performance from Brian Gasser to earn a 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.  Marietta (48-8) becomes the first team to repeat as national champion since 1979. It’s Marietta’s sixth national title in program history.  “As much as you don’t want to say it, today was Marietta’s day,” Wheaton coach Eric Podbelski said. “They’re a very …
