Warmer Weather Makes for Big Turnout at Festival of Lights

Thank you letter from Norton Parks and Recreation.

On behalf of the Norton Parks and Recreation Department, we would like to thank the community for participating in a fun family night this past Sunday at our Festival of Lights. The turnout was tremendous, due to the warmer weather.  We would also like to thank our sponsors: North Easton Savings Bank, Roche Bros. Supermarkets and Honey Dew Donuts. Without their support this event would not be possible. Also a big thank you to Santa and Mrs. Claus, Bob Kimball, Master of Ceremonies; Tim Brown, singer; The Norton Singers, Rev. Bernie Hinkley, Trinitarian Church; Junior Girl Scout Troop 80443 and their leaders Mrs. Sandy Ollerhead and Mrs. Erin Brennan for being Santa’s elves; Orsi Photographers; Jett Jam Entertainment; Norton Community Lions…

In Thanksgiving, For Each Other

Letter to the editor from Rep. Jay Barrows.

Even in the toughest of times, the human spirit never fails.   Just this past weekend, I was honored to attend a variety of events around my district where the generosity of our friends’ and neighbors’ time, talent and resources was on full display.  In Foxborough, the Annual BIT school fundraising event saw a turnout of 400 parents, school administrators, and supporters. Simultaneously, parents in Mansfield were doing the same good work for their elementary schools. Both events are run by extraordinary volunteers, primarily hard-working mothers, who spend months planning and finding new ways to earn additional dollars for their children and are largely successful.  Thank you. I also joined the Mansfield Pop Warner Awards Night this …

For Joe Kennedy III, Qualifications Need not Apply

Letter to the editor from Sean Slater.

Joe Kennedy III, a 31 year old with no qualifications and very little experience in business or politics is a candidate for the  4th Congressional District.  Sean Bielat, a Marine reserve officer and small business CEO with a proven track record of success and personal integrity is also running for this seat. Sean’s resume, charisma and economy – driven positions on fiscal responsibility would make him a heavy favorite in most congressional races across the country.  That being said, we are in Massachusetts, where there is a belief, however illogical, that a candidate’s name outweighs a candidate’s qualifications.  As familiar as voters might be with the Kennedy name, those same voters are as equally unfamiliar with his positions on many …

Very well said, Sean. It's pathetic that people are going to vote for a guy because of his last name instead of for what's right for our country. Bielat would make a great Congressman, but sadly the liberal lemmings in Newton, Brookline and Fall River will put JoKeIII over the top.   more ›

Thank You From Jimmy Fund Golf

Letter to the editor from Nancy Rowe.

Ms. Kelly Mello:  Jimmy Fund Golf extends its sincerest thanks to the organizers and sponsors of the Quality Beverage Golf Tournament held on June 7, Norton Country Club in Norton, Mass. Special recognition and appreciation goes to Conrad Wetterau, owner of Quality Beverage, along with Stephen Doherty of Franklin, Mass., and Jenn Nolan of Taunton, Mass., who organized the 21st annual event.     The dedicated sponsors, participants, and volunteers helped raise critical funds to support research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.   The Quality Beverage Golf Tournament is one of the many golf tournaments that will be held in 2012 to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber. The presenting sponsors for Jimmy Fund Golf’s 2012 …

Read and Understand Charter Changes

Letter to the editor from Steven Wiseman.

Recently The Board of Selectmen sent out a forty five page document of the Town Charter and the proposed changes to this Charter. Unfortunately this document only dealt with ballot question number one and some of the information provided for that question was incorrect (sections 3.5 and 3.8 should have been crossed out).  A letter of explanation was recently mailed and corrects the information and provides explanations for questions two and three.  The Charter Review Committee has worked long and hard with openness and opportunity for public input.  I hope that the voters take the time to review and understand the documents.  I may not agree with all of the changes however I must respect the thoughtfulness  and dedication the committee …

Get Out There and Vote

Letter to the editor by Steven Wiseman.

In addition to urging every voter to exercise your basic right, there are questions on the ballot this election that seek to take away your right to elect the Officials that serve you.    I will address the Water and Sewer Commissioners and the Superintendent of these Departments as I have experience in this position and understand the importance of the Office.  The Commissioners are charged with setting the rates of those connected to the systems, insuring the availability of safe drinking water and providing a system of disposal for the waste. Approximately one half of the households in the Town have failing or failed septic systems.  With the lack of proper drainage soils and mandated disposal regulations, the need for public sewers …

Voting Yes on the change gives us more control, not less. It means better opportunities for better management. Most if not all the current water commissioners first got on the board by being appointed. Most of them have subsequently run unopposed. Don't be fooled - this is about accountability and better service for Norton residents if we vote Yes.   more ›

Teen Pregnancy Should be Taken Seriously

Letter to the editor from Norton High student Micayla Valeri as a journalism assignment.

Dear Editor:   My reasoning for writing today is to raise awareness about a horrible subject that most teenage girls go through; the subject is teen pregnancy! Teen pregnancy is when a girl under the age of 20, or younger, gets pregnant either accidentally or even trying. This issue is going on all around the world. Some states are worse than others. Even though we all go through sex education in school, learn about protection and how to prevent it from happening, this does not stop some people from having sex. Many people are trying to raise awareness about teen pregnancy; it is still going to happen every day, and gradually getting worse! Most teenagers when they turn on the TV, they go straight to MTV. Some of the many shows on MTV are…

Micayla, you are correct. However, teen pregnancy is not always preventable by simply wearing protection. Condoms fail, birth control is not 100% effective and other "methods" do not work. The only way to prevent teen pregnancy is abstinence first, or using TWO forms of protection second. Sex Ed needs to be comprehensive and teach more than the basics and should encourage teens to have safe and …   more ›

Amount of Veterans Day Parade Spectators 'Disgusting'

Letter to the editor by 16-year-old Brandon Leavitt.

Our veterans are some of the most important people in our country. They faced horrors and threats we think only exists in movies. They have heard things, seen things, and done things we could never bear to do. The absolute least thing we could do for them is respect them. We need to show them that we care about what they have done for us. Above all else, we need to appreciate them. A while ago, I went to see the Veterans Day parade. I was shocked, appalled, and horrified to see that only perhaps fifty people came to show their appreciation by even watching. The scouts came to march in the parade, and a marching band marched with the veterans, but other than that, no one else came to the parade. A veteran walked past us with an incredibly …

Great comments Brandon and I like Cynthia McDonald's idea too. Maybe it is something you could run with and get community service credits as well. I always felt Veteran's Day was a "half-baked" holiday. I absolutely do not mean that as any disrespect to our veteran's. It is directed to those who designate the holidays. If we are going to have a holiday as important as a tribute to our Veterans, …   more ›

Little Wiffles Program a Rewarding Volunteer Option

Letter to the editor from NHS student Morgan Fox as a journalism assignment.

Dear Editor: In my community, a group of Norton High School students volunteer their time to play with children with a wide variety of disabilities. This organization is a Challenger League called “Little Wiffles” that is under the Norton Youth Baseball/Softball League.   On Saturday mornings   twenty- two players and thirty volunteers called ”Base Buddies” come out and play wiffle ball and kickball. Player’s ages range from four and up. On Saturday mornings, Base Buddies come out to the baseball field at the high schools parking lot to help these children one on one.  We help strengthen their playing skills and interaction skills.  Little Wiffles gives children with a disability a chance to play a sport that they normally would not …

High School Parking Fees Unfair

Letter to the editor from Kaleigh Schleicher as part of a journalism assignment.

Dear Editor:  I am writing to you today about Norton students being charged unfairly to park at the high school.  Only students are charged a fee to park.  My reasons for believing this is unfair are because our school already charges for busing, sports, and other necessities.  Even though charging for these things is necessary for our school system, it does add a financial burden.  Parking in the lot is a cheaper option than busing, and for students who have cars it is a more practical solution.  However, I believe it is unfair to students that the spot can be taken away as disciplinary action, once a student has paid for it. It is a privilege for a student to park in the lot, if they weren’t charged to do so. Once paid for it isn’t fair …

Kaleigh, Great argument here and I believe you are absolutely correct in your opinion. This is just another example of double punishment doled out by the Norton Schools just like when a student receives a suspension for a wrong doing, when deserved, but also is subject to losing a whole grade on his or her report card! In a changing world that requires more of the young adults to succeed these …   more ›
