The Warriors' held on to a 3-0 lead going into fifth inning but the Lancers prevail with a two run win.
In the end, it came down to that bottom of the fifth inning. Up 3-0, the KP Warriors (7-13) were only nine outs away from ending their season with a win, but hits and error were their undoing. By the time the inning was over, the Norton Lancers (9-10) led 5-3, which was enough to keep their playoff hopes alive. “That’s the big one that you can obviously point to. We got lackadaisical offensively in the third and fourth after thet got the three run lead,” said King Philip head coach Ed Moran. “We need to keep pouring it on so if something like that happens we have a cushion.” Things looked well initially for the Warriors, when a rattled Lancers pitcher, Brian DiOrio, gave up a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning to allow …

The Lancers' baseball team is back and looking to once again challenge the Tri-Valley League.
The only thing for sure is that nothing is for sure when it comes to the Norton High baseball team’s lineup. With a team that is able to adjust and move players around based on need, head coach Ted Currle has the advantage of adjusting the lineup with more ease than most teams. “There’s only really one kid who’s locking into one position, and that’s Brian Loud, our catcher,” Currle said. “Everyone one else is pretty versatile and that’s a good thing.” While senior captain Loud is set at catcher, the Lancers have a basic idea on who to expect around the field. Senior captains Christian Delano and Colin Feeney are back to lead the team in the outfield. Delano is expected to take center field while Feeney, who Currle noted has the strongest …

New softball coach Brian Clemmey takes the field.
After a season that saw the Norton High School softball team go 7-13, the Lancers are looking for a fresh start with new softball coach Brian Clemmey. While new to the softball team, Clemmey is no stranger to Norton. The former Mansfield softball coach has spent the last four seasons on the sidelines of the football team as their defensive coordinator. Even before the opening game, it is apparent that coach Clemmey is challenging his new team with two scrimmages against Division 1 teams North Attleboro and Taunton. Despite going against schools with double or even triple the enrollment of Norton High, the Lancers have been doing their best to hang in the scrimmages. “We scrimmaged two top level D1 teams in Taunton HS and North Attleboro…

Recognized for accomplishments on and off the court.
The varsity boys basketball team was honored at Monday night’s School Committee meeting for their accomplishments both on and off the court. Though Norton fell to Westwood in the first round of the Division 3 South Sectional tournament, this was the first season they achieved a 10 game winning streak in the TVL. This is the second time they went 15 - 3. This was the first time the boys played in an outright boys basketball championship since 1988. This was also the first Tri-Valley League title ever as well. Not only were they recognized for their athletic accomplishments, but in their general character as well. “That’s all nice to say all those things they accomplished historical things, athletically, but most of them in here take honors …

The Norton High wrestlers simply ran out of steam and luck at the All-State Tournament in Salem this weekend. Fatigue, injuries and illness all caught up to the Lancers, and although they made a strong bid, the level of competition was unforgiving. Scott Coleman, D-3 State champion at 145 pounds got the wind knocked out of him in his first match and, with his lungs still compromised by a recent case of pneumonia, had an asthma attack and couldn't recover within the 1 and 1/2 minutes of injury time allotted and had to default. He came back to win 9-3 in consolation over a D-1 state runnerup, but gassed in his next match and lost 4-3 to the wrestler he beat two weeks ago in the D-3 state semi-finals. Jack Cuneo, who was sixth in D-3 …

The Lancers win their first wrestling state championship after defeating Triton in the semi-finals and Holliston in the finals.
Coming into the 2011-2012 wrestling season, it was believed that this could be the year of the Lancers. All season long the Norton High wrestling team challenged some of the best in Division 3 and Division 1 in preparation for wrestling the state’s best in the postseason. Getting past the Triton Vikings in the semi-finals, the Norton Lancers defeated the Holliston Panthers in a thrilling final to win the school’s first ever MIAA Division 3 Team Wrestling State Championship. The Lancers got a break early on when Triton could not produce a wrestler at 106 pounds to force a no contest. Taking a forfeit at 113 pounds gave the Vikings a quick 6-0 lead. Fighting back, John Royale’s victory in the 138-pound match gave the Lancer a lead that they …

Steve Burrill, Dan Rafuse, and Colin Feeney all hit double digits in scoring as the Lancers beat the Westwood Wolverines 74-62
Its been a while since Norton High School had the chance to raise a banner for boys basketball but after the Lancers’ game with the Westwood Westwood, there is sure to be a banner on the walls proclaiming the Lancers to be at least co-TVL champions. “We’re champions of some sort. That’s the first one in 20 years,” Norton head coach Marc Liberatore said. While the Wolverines made it interesting at times, the Lancers pulled out a 74-62 win to clinch at least a portion of the Tri-Valley League Championship. Things started well enough for the Lancers when Dan Rafuse (18 points) nailed a pair of quick dishes under the basket and a three pointer. A couple of three pointers from Steve Burrill (30 points) helped maintain a 19-13 Lancers lead after…

Paul Feeney had a game high 19 points and eight rebounds. Zach Ruby had nine points and five assists. Paul Murphy had eight points. Both Steve Burrill and Dan Rafuse had seven points.
While the Norton boys’ basketball team is known for their outside jumpers and three-point shooting, they can still go to the basket and get production. Getting 26 trips to the free throw line in their previous match against Holliston, the Lancers once again went to that strategy, which lead to their 61-27 victory. “We thought we could drive to the basket again. That was an emphasis we talked about before we played,” said Lancers head coach Marc Liberatore. Driving to the basket and getting plenty of space down low, the Lancers (13-4 overall, 13-2 TVL) had no problem with the Panthers (4-13, 3-12). The Lancers jumped out to a fast start with Holliston unable to do anything about it. Getting men down low, the Lancers’ edge in rebounding …
