Dear Kelly Mello, Something within the Norton community that I feel as though should deserve to be recognized would be the fact that the teachers at the L.G.N Elementary school are so involved and helpful when it comes to the school to career program that the high school offers. Not really knowing how things run or how to do certain things in a different public building is really helpful when learning hands of activities that require certain skills when trying to become a teacher. Especially when you first start out your extremely nervous, you’re in a different work zone so it feels good to get that experience and help from a variety of different teachers that actually know and understand what it’s like to start off. I also feel as though …

Dear Kelly Mello: Something in our community that deserves recognition is Norton High School’s School to Career program. This program gives me and other students the privilege to gain work experience in careers of our interest. For this particular program it is a course that juniors and seniors get to chose for credits rather than taking alternative regular ones. The School to Career program allows students to decide if they truly want to work in a particular work field before it is chosen and they dislike it. Many high school students including myself have no idea what they want to go to college for and that can be very stressful. Throughout a student attending college’s years they tend to switch their majors because they find they like …

As son takes a new professional leap forward, a dad is very proud.
I always like it when good things happen to good people. And when one of those good people is my son, I like it even more. So forgive me for using my space here to express a little personal joy and satisfaction, but I’m happy for someone who really deserves it. My oldest child Aaron has spent the last decade or so as a reporter, most of it for a major Cape Cod newspaper. It is a career he has wanted since first heading off to college in the Berkshires, where he wound up editing the school newspaper. He also had a few other varied accomplishments out there, not all of which I care to talk about now. But he has a natural talent for writing and relating to people that has allowed him to develop into a topnotch professional journalist. Now the…

A son is honored, a father is proud
Journalism is a tough career, particular news reporting. I'm not talking about part-time columnists like me, but about professional journalists who work for newspapers, websites, and other media outlets trying to make a living in a calling that generally does not lead to great monetary rewards. These are the folks who bring us our news, report on the actions of our politicians, and feed us information about what is going on around the corner and around the world. They are the hard-working folks who believe in the importance and honor of what they do, whether reporting on the actions of the local selectmen or the shenanigans of our congressmen. Reporters start out knowing they will never be overly popular thanks to their role in our …

Congratulations Aaron, keep up the good work, and remember what Thomas Jefferson said: "Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter."   more ›
