Kids Have Heart building connections between students and the community.
J. C. Solmonese School teacher Maryan Welch presented the JCS Kids Have Heart program on Monday to the Norton School Committee. The KHH club at JCS is an extracurricular club within the school for grades 1 to 3 that promotes involvement within the community of Norton. “Service starts at a young age,” Welch said. “We take carry of ourselves, our environment and materials and each other.” The group promotes connectedness with the community through projects with local groups. The group has made lollipops for veterans, worked with the Norton Animal Shelter, made birdfeeders for outside JCS and heart pins for Valentine’s Day at the Senior Center. Despite weather, playground crew and volunteers about halfway done with structure.
After years of planning, students at J.C. Solmonese Elementary School will soon get to play on a new jungle gym. Crew members from Northeast Playground Builders and parent volunteers are about halfway through the building process. They even spent a few hours building the playground this past Wednesday when temperatures were in the teens. The jungle gym was originally scheduled to be finished at the end of January, but the weather has pushed back the finish date to the second week of February. “Regardless of the temperature, this playground is going to be built,” laughed Carolyn Gallagher of the Solmonese Parent Organization. “We have the nicest people from Northeast Playground Builders. $575,000 more will be sought in Fall Town Meeting.
The School Committee will ask for $575,000 more towards replacing the J. C. Solmonese Elementary School roof at Town Meeting later this month. This request for funds comes after the May Town Meeting, in which voters approved $925,000 to go towards the roof. A roof replacement has been on the capital improvements list for the past few years. Staff members are said to dodge leaks whenever it rains. Altogether, the project will cost $1.5M, which is what the article will request.
