TELL US: Should Mass. Blue Laws Be Eliminated?

Blue laws prohibit retailers from opening before midnight on Black Friday.

Black Friday is starting earlier than ever, as some national retailers have announced they will open the night of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22. However, here in Massachusetts, state blue laws prohibit stores from opening until midnight, according to a report by the Boston Globe.  Current blue laws prohibit retailers in the state from opening on Thanksgiving, thus preventing them from getting an early start on Black Friday sales, according to the Globe article. Some exceptions are restaurants, health care facilities and gas stations.  The laws, instituted in the 17th century, are intended to make sure holidays are properly observed, according to the Boston Globe.  Are Massachusetts' blue laws outdated? 'A Christmas Carol - The Musical' Preview at the Orpheum Theatre

The Christmas Carol at the Orpheum Theatre will run from Dec. 2 - Dec. 11 on the weekends.

  A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite Christmas tales. Who can resist a tear when Tiny Tim utters the words, “God bless us, everyone.” With special effects, colorful costumes, and traditional and original songs, the musical set to premier Dec. 2 - 11 at the Orpheum in Foxboro is an original adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. The Un-Common Theatre Company and Bay Colony Productions presented a preview Saturday evening with approximately 200 family members and friends in the audience. The lights dim, the theatre goes dark and you are in the magical world of A Christmas Carol. A rousing Christmas number is sung by the ensemble and toward the end of it enters Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Fred Armstrong. Armstrong gives Scrooge a …
