Freshman Deven Schuko, sophomores Russell Hansen and Elliott Johnson, juniors JT Taylor and Mike Travers, along with senior captain Stephen Hudson all had unblemished 3-0 records for the day with Schuko, Johnson and Travers winning all three matches by pins. Co-captain Travers currently leads the team with 27 wins and 22 pins while Hudson has 25 wins and 19 pins and holds the team record of 31 pins in a season and 94 pins in a career. He now has 118 career wins and has a good chance of catching …

Varsity wins against Norwell 58-13, Nauset 70-12 and Taunton 66-15.

In their opening day of competition, the Norton Lancer wrestlers left no doubt that they will be an exciting team to watch this season when they won all three of their meets in a home quad on Saturday. The defending league, sectional and D-3 state champions crushed Norwell 58-13, Nauset 70-12 and Taunton 66-15.   Led by senior captains Jack Cuneo and Stephen Hudson, nine Lancers went 3-0 on the day including seniors Brett Pike and newcomer Tim Casagni, juniors JT Taylor, Branden Pike and co-captains Myles McAlpine and Mike Travers, plus sophomore Elliott Johnson. Season Opener Saturday for Norton Wrestling

Lancers look for another successful season with new balanced team.

The defending Tri-Valley League and Division 3 State Champion Norton High wrestlers kick off the 2012-13 season this Saturday, Dec. 8, at home in a quad meet against Taunton, Nauset and Norwell starting at 10 a.m. The Lancers will be led by co-captains Stephen Hudson who is third in state at 220 lbs and Jack Cuneo who is sixth in state at 170 lbs. Coaches Pat Coleman, Chris McCarthy and John Royle are excited about this season's promise, despite graduating seven starters from last year's 26-1 team. That team included two state champs and three sectional champs. “While the strength of last season's team was talent, this season's team has more balance as the Lancers may fill all 14 weight classes for the first time in years,” coach Pat …

Fatigue Gets in Way of Wrestling All-State Tournament Win

Lancers satisfied with Division 3 State Championship

The Norton High wrestlers simply ran out of steam and luck at the All-State Tournament in Salem this weekend. Fatigue, injuries and illness all caught up to the Lancers, and although they made a strong bid, the level of competition was unforgiving.   Scott Coleman, D-3 State champion at 145 pounds got the wind knocked out of him in his first match and, with his lungs still compromised by a recent case of pneumonia, had an asthma attack and couldn't recover within the 1 and 1/2 minutes of injury time allotted and had to default.  He came back to win 9-3 in consolation over a D-1 state runnerup, but gassed in his next match and lost 4-3 to the wrestler he beat two weeks ago in the D-3 state semi-finals.   Jack Cuneo, who was sixth in D-3 …

Norton Wrestling Advances to Semi-Finals

Lancers beat out Lynnfield and N. Reading 47-27.

Norton made it to the semi-finals of the State Dual Meet Tournament with a 47-27 win over Lynnfield-N. Reading yesterday.   Brett Gallagher and Matt Pelletier won major decisions despite their injuries. John Royle also won a major decision over Lynnfield-N. Reading's sectional champion. Cam Hale notched his fifth tech fall of the season while John Norton, Scott Coleman, Jack Cuneo and Mike Travers (wrestling up two weight classes) all scored pins. Steve Hudson won by forfeit.   The Lancers will face Triton this afternoon and, hopefully, the winner of the Hingham versus Holliston meet in the finals tonight.

Lancers Go Two For Two In Wrestling Tri Meet

The Lancers find success against the Billerica Indians and the Oliver Ames Tigers.

With a one-day delay due to the snow and the absence of Weston turning this quad into a tri-meet, the Norton Lancers maintained their almost perfect record (15-1, 4-0 TVL) against both the Billerica Indians and the Oliver Ames Tigers. The Lancers defeated the Indians 38-21 and the Tigers 51-30. With a smaller squad due to miscellaneous injuries and illnesses, the Lancers were forced to shuffle the lineup against both the Indians and the Tigers to maintain a competitive match. “We don’t make excuses but we had to use our strategy as best we could to secure a team victory,” Norton head coach Pat Coleman said. “We moved some guys around in weight classes. We gave up some forfeits here and there but we had our eye on the scoreboard the whole …

Norton Wrestling Improves to 13-1 vs Hopkinton

The Lancers win all but one match en route to a 54-9 win.

Part of the deal of joining the Norton Lancers wrestling team are the high expectations that comes with being on a traditionally competitive team. “Our goal was to win every match JV and varsity against a tough team,” Lancers head coach Pat Coleman said. "I think the boys did a tremendous job of that.” Losing only one match by points, the Lancers soundly defeated the Hopkinton Hillers, 54-9 . The Hillers had one lead during the meet at 6-0 via a Norton forfeit in the 106 pound match. After that, it was the Lancers who were pushing the pace. Ahrayah Saintius got the first win for the Lancers in the 113 pound match after an injury to Scott Nixon gave Norton a default win in the third period. John Norton escaped almost certain defeat in the …

Lancers' Wrestling Sweep Quad Meet

They Lancers get three wins over Hingham, Somerset-Berkley, and Sharon to win the quad meet.

While there were three opponents Saturday morning at the Lancers’ wrestling quad meet, it was apparent that the defending MIAA Division III South Sectional Team Champion Hingham Harbormen were gong to be the biggest challenge for Norton. “We knew we were going to have a hard match against them today,” Norton head coach Pat Coleman said. “It was closer than I had anticipated but its good for us.” With most of their team wrestling against each opponent, the Lancers defeated Hingham, Somerset-Berkey, and Sharon to walk away from the meet 3-0. In the opening match against Hingham, it was a battle different but almost evenly balanced strenghts as Norton had the advantage in the lower weight divisions and the Harbormen were the superior team in …

Norton Wrestlers win Middleborough Tournament

B Team takes home sixth place.

Coming off an impressive second place finish in the 32 team Marshfield Tournament earlier in the week, the Norton High wrestling team was regarded as the clear favorite to win its third title at the13 team Middleborough Tournament and the Lancers did not disappoint. Norton won by a margin of nearly 60 points taking championships in five of the 14 weight classes.   In addition, Norton's "B" team (each school could enter two wrestlers per weight class) took sixth place honors, the highest finish of any "B" team and ahead of eight of the varsity teams entered. Norton's point total of 269.5 was well ahead of runner-up Nauset with 207 and third place Oliver Ames with 186. Weight class champions for the Lancers included Brett Gallagher (120 lbs…
