Tour of high school construction given at School Committee meeting.
The School Committee and other meeting attendees were treated to a tour of the new addition at Norton High School Monday night. Tom O'Neil, project director at Pinck & Co., Inc. and Steve Roman, project manager of W.T. Rich headed up the tour, showing the group the beginning of the new cafeteria, science rooms and other areas. Along with the School Committee, selectmen chairman Tim Giblin and vice chairman Robert Kimball came along for the tour. Before February vacation, the new cafeteria will be utilized for lunch. The old one will be used as swing space for classrooms so that construction can commence in other areas of the building. Complete construction is to be finished in December 2013. “We are tracking right on schedule,” Roman said…

Cell phone use always seems to be an issue at Norton High. Even though the rules are enforced more this year, kids are still texting, tweetng, and checking facebook. A possible fixation to this problem should definitely be considered, especially with a fresh new look to the school for new underclassmen and for others moving up the grade scale. Personally, I think that kids getting in trouble for using their cell phones in the lunchrooms cause kids to use them more in the classrooms. We’re not learning during lunch and it wouldn’t distract anyone if there were the freedom to use phones at lunch. It’s understandable that kids shouldn’t be using cell phones in class because it will affect their learning experiences, but it’s proven that when …

Septic component pushing project back up to eight weeks.
The groundbreaking for the new addition to Norton High School may not happen as early as hoped. “It may be delayed up to 6 to 8 weeks based on some EPA approvals we need for the septic system,” said Tom Golota, who is on the Building Project Committee. Originally, shovels were set to hit the ground early March, but because the sewer component of the project needs to be finished first, work cannot begin on the building. The school will forgo using a septic system and will instead be tied into the town's waste water system. Committee members believe the project completion goal of Dec. 30, 2013 is still attainable. “Right now all of the construction people involved feel there are some ways we can move things around and escalate some pieces …

We asked, and you answered. Here are the notes from last night's School Committee meeting in order from what you care about the most according to yesterday's poll. #1 High School Building Project Update Since the School Committee last met, there have been no major changes. Comments were sent to the project manager. #2 Budget Discussion The operating budget of Norton Public Schools for fiscal year 2012 was $22.5 million. So far, $5.1 million has been spent. There is $1.2 …

“He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.” Ben Franklin. I think “TruthSeeker” has legitimate concerns about citizen's being monitored with no warrant. And sadly, folks cheer the disintegration of our constitution on to be ‘‘safe” thus consenting with the government as it grabs all kinds of frightening powers over its people. It's naive to think that arrest means guilt. Life is …   more ›
