Chanukah celebration held in Norton town common.
Students, adults, families and local politicians gathered to celebrate the lighting of the menorah on Norton town common Wednesday night. The Menorah of Freedom, which is roughly 8 feet tall, was built by former firefighter Ed Burgess. Burgess wanted to do something special in name of his wife, who is Jewish. With the help of other firefighers, he erected the menorah out of PVC pipes and lanterns. “The holiday of Chanukah is a festival of a historic victory and celebration for all times, highlighted by the kindling of Menorahs each night of the holiday,” said director of the Chabad Jewish Center Rabbi Yossi Kivman. On the sixth night of Chanukah, Dec. 6, the Chabad Jewish Center sponsored its second annual menorah lighting and Chanukah Celebration on the Norton Town Green. It was a cold night, with temperatures around 30 degrees. There was even a very light snowfall during the event. But the weather did not dampen the mood, as children and adults got together to dance, sing traditional Chanukah songs and eat foods such as Sufganiyot, also known as Israeli donuts, Chanukah gelt, chocolate coins and drink hot cocoa.
