Raiders’ win over Lancers on Friday proceeds tough start to next week for team.
The Dover-Sherborn High girls’ tennis team prepared for a challenging start to next week with a 5-0 victory over Norton in a Tri-Valley League match on a windy Friday afternoon at the Norton Middle School. With the victory, the Raiders improved their record to 6-2 both overall and in the Tri-Valley League. The loss dropped the Lancers to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the league. “I thought we played well,” said fourth-year Dover-Sherborn head coach Karen Raymond. “The wind was really a factor. You really have to focus on a day like this. Norton has given us a couple of good battles this year. They are a much improved team.” Dover-Sherborn will start next week having to host two of the top teams in the league in Medfield and Hopkinton. The Raiders…

Lancers rebound from loss earlier in the week to Medfield by beating Millis on Thursday.
A mark of a good team is how it responds to a loss. The Norton High girls’ outdoor track team has lost two Tri-Valley League dual meets this spring, but in each instance the Lancers have responded with a victory in their next meet. The second such case came on Senior Day Thursday afternoon when Norton rebounded from a defeat to Medfield earlier in the week to claim a 110-18 victory over Millis in a league dual meet at Norton High School. The Lancers suffered a 90-46 setback to the Warriors on Monday in Medfield, but their big win over the Mohawks on Thursday improved their league dual-meet mark to 5-2. “We moved some kids around today and everyone did a good job,” said Norton coach Dick Seibert, whose team swept the 100 meters, high jump …

Lancers drop a hard-fought 71-64 decision to the Mustangs on Tuesday at home.
Many times, meets are not won with first-place finishes, but with second and third-place showings and the points that come with those placements. That is what happened to the Norton High girls’ outdoor track team during its Tri-Valley League meet with Medway on a warm Tuesday afternoon at Adams Field as the Mustangs used multiple second and third place efforts to outlast the Lancers, 71-64. It was the first loss of the season for Norton, who dropped to 3-1. The Lancers had opened the year with victories over Dover-Sherborn, Holliston and Bellingham. “We knew it was going to be a close meet,” said Norton coach Dick Seibert, “and all the seconds and thirds by Medway made the difference in the meet for them.” Along with registering several …

Despite injuries, Lancers have begun season with three consecutive victories.
Several injuries have not stopped the Norton High girls’ outdoor track and field team from beginning the 2011 campaign with a perfect 3-0 record. The Lancers, under the direction of first-year head coach Dick Seibert, have had an outstanding campaign so far. The Lancers opened the year with an impressive 102-37 victory over Dover-Sherborn on April 7 at Adams Field. Norton then registered an important win in Holliston, earning a 72-64 victory over the Panthers on April 11. It was the first time since the Lancers have been a member of the TVL that they have beaten Holliston. Norton then improved to 3-0 with a 98-34 victory over Bellingham last Thursday at Adams Field. Sophomore Emma Ethier captured a pair of events, winning the 110 hurdles …

Hard work and positive attitudes will carry Lancers this spring.
Having to compete in the talent-laden Tri-Valley League, it continues to be a building process for the Norton High girls’ tennis team. And with 21 youngsters in the program this spring that process is definitely headed in the right direction. There are six seniors on the team, along with two juniors, four sophomores and nine freshmen. “We didn’t cut anyone this year,” said 12th-year Lancer head coach Everett Clark. “I did that because I have two volunteer assistant coaches this year, so I have plenty of help. Ideally you would want to keep 14-16 kids. That is about the best number, assuming that all the kids have played before. But if they all haven’t played before, 21 is ideal. “We are looking to build interest. Our hope is to get the …

Hillers knock off Lancers in Tri-Valley League match on Monday in Norton.
The Hopkinton High girls’ tennis team registered its first victory of the season with a 5-0 victory over Norton in a Tri-Valley League match on Monday afternoon at the Norton Middle School. The victory improved the Hillers to 1-1 overall and in the TVL. Hopkinton had opened the season with a 4-1 setback to league rival Medfield last Friday afternoon at home. With the loss, the Lancers dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the TVL. “It was great to get that first win,” said Hopkinton head coach Nancy Clark. “This will be a confidence builder for the kids and it will help them relax. Today the girls did a better job of using more tools in their tool boxes. They tried to do a little of everything.” The best match of the day was at third singles …

Lancers lose their first match of the season 4-1.
The D-S girls varsity tennis team was undermanned on Friday but they still came through with a big win over Tri-Valley League opponent Norton by a score of 4-1. “We have a team of 10; we only had seven players due to some other things that people had to do, and then we had a couple players who’ve never played on our team before play in starting positions. So we did pretty well,” said Karen Raymond, girls varsity tennis head coach. Several players for D-S also found themselves in different positions that they were in last year. “Our second singles, Sarah Egener had played first doubles last year so she had a good start,” Raymond said. “Olivia Finnegan had played number two last year, and she’s now at one. So there were a lot of people [in…

Local team wins regular-season league title with 11-1 record.
It is never easy playing an entire season with a target on your back. That’s what has faced the Norton eighth grade girls’ basketball Division 1 travel team this winter. But aside from one small setback a few weeks ago, the team has performed very well under those conditions. After recording a perfect 15-0 mark and capturing the MetroWest League’s seventh grade Group 1 tournament last winter, Norton entered this campaign as the team to beat. But the locals have responded to the challenge, winning 11 of 12 games and capturing the regular-season crown in the MetroWest League’s eighth grade girls’ Division 1. Norton won its first eight games of the season by at least 19 points. However, facing tougher competition in their final four games, …

Lancers break six-game losing streak with win on Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday.
The Norton High girls’ basketball team completed its season in exciting fashion, coming back to defeat Martha’s Vineyard 46-44 in a non-league game on Wednesday afternoon in Oak Bluffs. Senior captain and forward Shannon Hansen finished her Lancer career in the best way possible, hitting a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the game to give her team an exciting two-point victory. It was a terrific turnaround for Norton, who had dropped a tough 58-38 decision to the Vineyarders two weeks ago at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. In fact, the season as a whole was a terrific turnaround under second-year head coach Nicole Nunes. The Lancers won just two games a year ago, but improved that total by six with the exciting win over the …
