The Wheaton College women's basketball team has earned a reputation for being as active in the community as they are on the court, engaging in service projects that range from food drives to coaching and mentoring the Heller's Angels Special Olympics basketball team. The latter effort has put them in the running for an award from the NCAA. Most recently, the Wheaton women worked this semester with the eighth grade girls' basketball team from Norton Middle School, helping them grow athletically and personally. The Lyons began their collaboration with the middle school team by hosting weekly basketball clinics throughout September. The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams and the synchronized swimming team recently participated in the seventh annual Ted Mullin "Hour of Power" Relay on Monday, November 19 raising funds for pediatric sarcoma research. The "Hour of Power" Relay event honors Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. Funds raised through the event support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. Carleton College held its first "Hour of Power" Relay on November 7, 2006 and has seen the charity event blossom from 15 team in its first year to over 160 teams in 2011 with 8,000 student-athletes participating. Man of Many Hats adds Mayor to repertoire.
The race for the unofficial Mayor of Norton has ended, with Steven Bishop coming out on top. Bishop raised $1,276, which was matched by Teachers Driving Academy, totaling $2,552. His opponent, Meg Fox, raised $630. Together, they raised $3,182, half of which went towards Norton Parks and Recreation Department. The rest went towards the charities of Bishop's choice. In honor of his opponent, Bishop wrote a check from his business for $250 to give to Little Wiffles, a wiffle and kickball league for disabled children ages 4 and older. Leah Fernandes Memorial 5k to support Lia Scagnoli who was diagnosed with kidney cancer.
In the second year of the Leah Fernandes Memorial 5k, yet another family will benefit from the generosity of Norton. This year, a portion of funds from the run will go toward helping 3-year-old Lia Scagnoli, daughter of Peter and Tara Scagnoli of Norton. Lia was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer and will soon undergo surgery and treatments. “We hope it can help ease their minds just a bit,” Tracy said. A team will be running in honor of Lia and selling orange team bracelets for $5 each on race day to support the family. Voting has been extended to select the unofficial Mayor of Norton. Each vote costs $1 and there isn't a limit to the number of votes a person can cast. Cheer Nation of Stoughton will be holding an open tumble fundraiser this Friday, July 20 for Angel's family.
A Stoughton cheerleading program will be stepping up this Friday to hold a fundraiser for the family of Angel Pina, the Norton girl who was was killed following a tragic single car rollover on Route 24 southbound on the Stoughton/Avon line. Pina, 12, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The crash also hospitalized two other Norton women, including Pina's mother, Sandra Ouellette. Pina recently finished fifth grade at H.A. Yelle Elementary School in Norton, according to a release from the Norton Public Schools. She was scheduled to attend Norton Middle School in September. Norton High swimmers and divers raise money for team, Cupboard of Kindness.
Tuesday night, Norton High swimmers and divers raised over $1,000 for the team and Norton’s Cupboard of Kindness with a Relay-a-Thon in the Wheaton College pool. While one third of the team was given donations beforehand, the rest were sponsored per lap and so are still collecting money, which is due Friday. As of last night, however, the team already earned $1,100 total. Norton swim team coach Kim Bray hopes to bring a portion of the money to Cupboard of Kindness Monday. The team will use the rest for things such as stopwatches, which have to be replaced every year, team caps, deck shirts to wear during meets, end of season banquet, any equipment that needs to be replaced, etc. "Our supplies tend to dwindle year to year," Bray said. …

N.E.E.D. Inc., Norton Embracing Educational Development, will be conducting the Square 1 Art fundraiser again this coming school year as one of the annual fund drives. Elementary students will create their artwork during art class. Middle school students, who choose to participate, can create their art as an after school activity. "This is a lot of fun, as well as rewarding for the children to see their final products turned into memorable keepsakes and/or gifts," said Sheila Mackie in a press release. This is N.E.E.D.’s largest fundraiser of the year, receiving 33 percent of the proceeds of the products purchased.
