LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Community Spirit is What it's all About

First Night brings the community together.

By now we have all read the great articles about Norton’s First Night.  As terrific as the talent was, as fantastic the food was, as beautiful the bonfire was, the best thing in my mind about the event was that it brought together people from all over the town. It generated true community spirit. It was an event that brought people together, not for some political cause, but for just pure enjoyment. You were able to see people that you don’t see every day. It reminded me a lot of the fall soccer season. I always equate that experience to something like seeing your neighbors emerge from their homes after a long hard winter. But until First Night, fall soccer and Lighting of the Common were the only community events to bring people together…

Norton High School wrestling was featured on Tuesday. This story was a preview of upcoming tournaments in which Norton finished in 10th place overall and had the highest finish of all the Division 3 teams at the competition. Norton residents enjoyed a variety of entertainments and activities at the town's first First Night celebration. In addition to local singers, bands and storytellers, residents enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. "While I know that some always say there is always room for improvement, I am not one of them," First Night Chairman Brian Coughlin said. "I dont think that any member of the team would change anything and neither would I. The weather was even perfect." The skies were free of precipitation and the temperature remained around 40 degrees. According to Police Lieutenant Todd Jackson, the entire night was incident free. "…

On New Year's Eve, Norton is about to get a whole lot bigger. Norton's First Night is expected to draw a huge crowd and will have an abundance of events. One of the highlights is Norton Has Talent. VIDEO: Norton Boy To Demonstrate Musical Skills During Talent Show

Ten-year-old Derek Martin to sing and play guitar for First Night festivity.

Already a budding musician at age 10, playing guitar and singing various times for school, Derek Martin plans on becoming much more. "Becoming famous is my biggest dream," he said. Just one more step in achieving this goal, Derek will be performing in Norton Has Talent, part of the town's First Night celebration Dec. 31. Derek will have approximately 15 minutes to play his guitar and sing songs, one of which is a special tribute to Norton. It took him about two days to write the song, "300 Glory Years," which goes to the tune of "Other Side" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. "He starts playing, he yells out the words and then I write," said his mother, Sally Martin. "300 Glory Years" is chock full of facts about the town, mentioning King Philip's …

Norton Girl To Show Off Flair For Writing During First Night

The 9-year-old will open Norton Has Talent with story about time travel.

As soon as First Night chairman Brian Coughlin spoke to Lily Holloway's fourth grade class about Norton Has Talent, the 9 year old knew she wanted to be involved. Lily, a student at Henri A. Yelle Elementary, was very eager to call Beth McManus, the coordinator of the talent show. She left a lengthy message on the phone, and patiently waited three days before getting a call back. When Annemarie Holloway answered, McManus told Lily's mom how great of an idea Lily had. And so now Lily is opening the event with a story about time travel. "Lily's dad is a history buff," Annemarie said. "When she said 'I want to do a story about time travel,' his face lit up." "I'm going through all the history of Norton and the things that were there," Lily …

"Happy New Year," said First Night committee chairman Brian Coughlin to about 45 volunteers at the monthly table top meeting Oct. 25. "Only 69 days until New Year's Eve." Norton turns 300 years old June 11, 2011 but the party is starting early with a First Night celebration Dec. 31. Preparation for the big night began about 18 months ago with the formation of the committee, Coughlin said. First Night will open to the public 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and end after midnight Jan. 1, 2011, with a fireworks display, sponsored by North Easton Savings Bank who donated $10,000 to the event. Roche Brothers, 175 Mansfield Ave., donated $5,000 to the event. This donation will help the committee buy a countdown clock that they had discussed at a previous meeting…
