Town Moderator Seeking Finance Committee Members

Four terms due to expire in June.

Norton Town Moderator Bill Gouveia is seeking citizens wishing to be appointed to the town Finance Committee. Gouveia notes there will be four terms on the 11-member body expiring at the end of June, and at least one will be open due to a resignation.  Gouveia relates the Finance Committee is an important board in town. It makes recommendations to the voters on all articles that will appear before the Town Meeting, including the town budget. Those appointed must be available to meet on Monday and Wednesday nights, or sometimes just one of those, between February and early May, and then again for a shorter time in September and October as well as occasional meetings in between those times. There is no experience necessary, and you do not …

Town Manager, Finance Committee Disagree on Budget

Town meeting 7 p.m. May 14 in Norton Middle School auditorium.

Town Manager Michael Yunits is offering a few changes to the upcoming Norton town budget, proposing to reduce the Town Clerk’s raise and add to the staff of the communications department while reducing the town’s donation to the school department.  The total town budget stands at $48,309,794 using the finance committee’s most recent recommendations, Yunits told selectmen Thursday. The budget includes an unanticipated $162,000 in revenue for veteran’s reimbursements.  He said he wants to reduce the Town Clerk’s proposed 29 percent raise, as recommended by the finance committee, to one percent, a reduction of $13,067. Yunits and selectmen had discussed the fact that because the Town Clerk still remains an elected position, neither he nor the…

Terms to expire in June.

Norton town moderator Bill Gouveia announced that he is seeking applicants to fill at least one vacancy on the Norton Finance Committee.  One position will become vacant due to the individual’s request not to be reappointed on June 30. Candidates for the positions must be registered Norton voters, show an ability to be objective and reasonable, and be willing to learn about town government and the town budget. They must also be able to make the time commitment, which is up to two nights per week for approximately three months in the spring, and then one month in the fall, plus occasional other meetings. AN INSIDE LOOK

Finance Committee in Need of New Members

Out of almost 12,000 registered voters there must be a few willing to serve on this crucial board

Norton is a town of about 20,000 residents. Almost 12,000 of them are registered voters. Over 4,400 of those folks showed up to cast ballots at the June override election, and close to 1,700 were at Town Meeting the week before that. So why has it become so incredibly difficult to find one or two citizens willing to serve on the town’s Finance Committee? As Town Moderator, one of my important jobs is to appoint the Finance Committee. This is a very crucial board, although it actually has little to no direct power or authority. It is a group of regular citizens who meet during various times of the year to simply make recommendations on the town budget and the articles that appear on the warrant of every Town Meeting.  The qualifications to …
