Last Chance: Voter Registration

Deadline is April 10.

The last day to register to vote or change your political party for the Special State Primary and Annual Town Election is Wednesday, April 10. This is also the last day to register for the Annual Town Meeting scheduled for Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Norton Middle School. The Norton Town Clerks Office, located on the first floor of Town Hall, 70 E. Main St., will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. Town Hall is open for regular hours Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Annual Town Election and the Special State Primary is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30. Election to Include Two Write-In Candidates

Stephen Ceckowski to be a write-in for the Water/Sewer Board while Kelly Theresa plans to be a write-in for the Board of Assessors.

March 12 was the deadline to return these papers. All the papers that were returned have been certified and candidates obtained at least 50 signatures, as was required. “You will note that two of the people who took out papers did not return them,” said Town Clerk Danielle Sicard. “I have been in contact with both of these people and they are currently considering running as a write-in candidate.” The following people have taken out papers: Board of Selectmen (Two seats available): Incumbent Robert Kimball Jr., incumbent Robert Salvo Sr. and George Gillis School Committee (Two seats available): Incumbent Andrew Mackie, Valerie Desmond, Mark Powers and Daniel Sheedy Planning Board (Three seats available): Incumbent David Miller and George …

George F. Burgess, Mark Powers and Daniel Sheedy have dropped their names in the hat for this year’s annual town election. Burgess has taken out papers for the Planning Board. He is on the ballot next to incumbent David Miller for one of three seats available. Powers and Sheedy will be up against current School Committee chairperson Andrew Mackie and nominee Valerie Desmond. There are two three-year terms available. Incumbents Robert Kimball Jr. and Robert Salvo Sr. are looking to be reelected while George Gillis is also vying for a seat. TELL US: Can the Youth Vote be Swayed?

Wheaton College student tells the Huffington Post that so long as the Republican Party takes a hardline stance on social issues the answer is no.

After last Tuesday's election, studies have shown that young voters continue to lean toward the Democratic Party and had a heavy hand in re-electing President Barack Obama. An analysis by Center for Research and Information on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University determined that without voters ages 18 to 29 - who made up 19 percent of the electorate - Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Pennsylvania would have been flipped from Blue to Red. Howitt Looks to the Future of 4th Bristol District

With State Representatives Steven Howitt re-elected last Tuesday, he plans to get back in the saddle to advocate for his district. “The next day you sort of catch your breath,” Howitt said, adding that he’s gotten a lot of positive responses to his re-election. The Seekonk resident attributed his success to his many volunteers, particularly his wife Pam, for helping with his campaign. Howitt received about 63 percent of the votes. In Seekonk, he beat out opponent A. Keith Carreiro 4459 to Keith Carreiro 2491. In Norton, Howitt had 2,226 votes to Carreiro’s 1,366.  In Swansea, Howitt obtained 1,334 votes to Carreiro’s 1,615.
