Norton Family Organizes Shoebox Share Project for Hurricane Victims

Boxes of toys to be delivered to children affected by Hurricane Sandy by Leavitt family.

Though Hurricane Sandy brought destruction along the east coast two weeks ago, people like Jessie Leavitt hope to bring a little joy to affected families this holiday season. With the idea stemming from her 10-year-old son Trenton, Leavitt organized the Shoebox Share Project, which will send gifts, toys and treats to children whose lives were uprooted by Sandy.  Leavitt's family has already donated bags of clothes, and she noted that many organizations are collecting toothbrushes, soaps, shampoos and other toiletries. Beforehand, a bid will be put out for $825,000 that will confirm the actual cost of the project. With this money, the track will be taken up and the asphalt underlayment will be re-ground and reused to create the new base. Cracks were patched last summer as a temporary fix. According to superintendent Dr. Patricia Ansay, the material used in the current track dates back to the mid 80s. The bleachers will also be replaced. 'Christmas Is For Kids' Still In Need Of Gift Donations

Area groups try to make the goal of giving to 900 kids.

Today is the last day for donors to bring in their bags for Christmas Is For Kids, an annual gift-giving program created by the Attleboro Area Council for Children, which is in need for toys, clothing and monetary donations in order to distribute gifts to the nearly 900 children who would otherwise go without. While the program has been able to fulfill the wishes of 774 local children, they do not have enough to provide gifts to the remaining 126 children in Seekonk, Norton, North Attleboro, Rehoboth and Attleboro. Liz Cochrane, a board member, was worried when the phone …
