The Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams finished their third meet in as many weeks on Saturday at the annual University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational. The women placed 14th out of 38 teams with 402 points, while the men finished in 26th place in the 39-team field with 804 points. For the third consecutive week, freshman Jordan Silva (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) was Wheaton's top runner, as she cracked the top 50 among nearly 300 finishers. Crossing the 5,000-meter run finish line in 19:46, Silva took 49th overall. The Wheaton College field hockey team finished its season on a down note Saturday afternoon, as the host Lyons dropped an 8-2 decision to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University at Faxon Field. Wheaton ended its fall with an overall record of 3-14 and league mark of 0-8, while the Cougars advance to next week's NEWMAC Tournament at 12-5 and 4-4. The Wheaton College women's volleyball team had its Senior Day spoiled by visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons dropped a 3-0 (6-25, 17-25, 23-25) decision during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Emerson Gymnasium. The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams began 2012-13 in strong fashion, as the Lyons swept host Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon at the Linsey Pool. The Judges were competing for the first time since 2009-10. The Wheaton men notched a convincing 159-97 triumph, while the women won 163-130. Winners in seven events, the men were led by sophomore Richard Jenkins (Bow, N.H./Bow), who secured victories in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes while leading off the winning 200-yard medley relay. WOMEN'S SOCCER The Wheaton College Lyons suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 2-1-1. The team outshot the Ephs 5-4 in the opening half, but no one scored until five minutes into the second half when senior Brett Echeniguen scored the only goal of the match, handing the Lyons a loss of 1-0.
