Wheaton College senior outfielder Sean Ryan(Norton, Mass./Norton) knocked in a game-high four runs to lead the Lyons, ranked no.10 overall in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, over WPI by an 18-2 score in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday evening at Sidell Stadium. The Engineers were tabbed as the home team for today's contest in a makeup game originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 in Worcester, Mass. The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked no.10 overall in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Clark University by scores of 7-0 (seven innings) and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. Wheaton 7, Clark 0 (seven innings) Junior right-handed pitcher Alec Palioca (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) allowed just three hits over seven innings of work to push his record to 3-1 overall on the season. Lyons focused on NEWMAC championship run.
Despite being ranked preseason favorites in two national polls and appearing in the NCAA Division III College World Series last season, the focus of the Wheaton College baseball team remains the same as the Lyons head into their 2013 campaign. "Our goals are always to take care of today, try to get better and try to continue progressing throughout the year," said head coach Eric Podbelski who is in his 17th year at the helm. "Certainly a goal of ours is to win our NEWMAC regular season championship so that we have a chance to host the NEWMAC Tournament and win our NEWMAC Tournament. The Wheaton College baseball team has been ranked first overall in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Preseason Poll after receiving eight first place votes and 594 points total. The Lyons are now ranked first overall in two separate preseason polls with their first place selection to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Preseason Poll earlier this month. Wheaton topped St. Thomas by eight points and Marietta, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, by 16 points to earn the number one spot in the preseason poll. The official turf field groundbreaking and the 2012 baseball team ceremonies highlighted Homecoming Saturday for the Wheaton College Department of Athletics. The turf field, which will officially be named the Diane C. Nordin '80 Turf Field thanks to her lead gift to the project, is set to be completed by fall 2013 and will be utilized by the varsity field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse programs, club sports and intramurals teams, as well as many others. Saturday's ceremony celebrated the construction start of the college's new turf field. Wheaton baseball team nabs conference and regional crown, but not championship.
The Wheaton Lyons baseball team returned to Norton with their heads held high as Div. III National Championship runners up Thursday. They were greeted by friends and family and honored by President Ronald Crutcher. For the second time in six years, the Lyons finished second in the tournament. They won against St. Thomas, SUNY Cortland and Webster before falling to Marietta in the championship round of the College World Series.

Wheaton College got a chance at redemption. However, the result wasn’t what the Lyons had desired. One day after the Marietta College baseball team downed Wheaton 6-5, the Lyons got another shot at the defending Division III national champions in the title game. Marietta -- the top-rated team in the nation entering the tournament -- scored four runs in the first two innings and used a strong pitching performance from Brian Gasser to earn a 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.
